Bedard is going to be pretty stellar. Maybe even Mackinnon level as he grows.

The biggest problem when assessing teams or young players is the media and fans often label young team's contenders way too soon and get impatient.
Colorado had great linemates for MacKinnon but Rantanen and Landeskog were young too. Rantanen is younger than MacKinnon. He was 19 in MacKinnon's last 50 point season. He's great, but how great was he when he was 19.
Teams that have loads of players 25 and under are almost always disappointing.
Buffalo is the prime example of a team right now that the pro rebuilding group says they will be good but the people that don't like rebuilding laugh at that some suggest Buffalo will be good. Most of their top line players are 19 to 22 years old. They just need to stop having players that want out.

Crosby, McDavid, Stamkos, Svechnikov, Kane, Laine, Kopitar, Matthews, Seguin, Keller, Marner are the only active players who got more as an 19 year old
6 sure fire HOFers.
Sure he may not end up in McDavid, McKinnon or Crosby level, but still not bad for the most overated player in the league
He may only end up as a HOFer
|
That's a pretty high bar - if he becomes an HOFer, I will eat crow on that one, that is for sure.

The fact that Bedard is putting up more points than MacKinnon did at this age is not at all an indication that Bedard will reach, or surpass MacKinnon's trajectory. Almost no one does. And regression is generally not an encouraging sign, regardless of MacKinnon - he is the exception, not the rule.

The NHL is riddled with players with sophomore slumps.

Also, the HOF is a different bar than 'generational', by quite a lot. As I said, I think he will be a great player, and compared him to Pastrnak. Pastrnak is probably a HOFer - he's hit 100 pts twice, and will very likely get over 1,000 pts. That should be enough for the HOF.
That is not what people are suggesting for Bedard - most fans are still saying generational, or close to it. That is what I'm debating, and why I think he's over-rated. Pastrnak level? Very likely. Top 5 in the league? We'll see (I doubt it). Generational? Very unlikely IMO.

Is he going to be a great player? Almost certainly. Is he going to be a star player? We'll see what level.
But many fans still seem to think that he will be a generational player. I know a lot of fans here thought he would be better than McDavid, before he was drafted. Personally, I never saw that - maybe something more like a Kucherov or a Kane.
But almost 2 years later? The progression hasn't been what one would expect for a star, let alone a generational player. 0.90 PPG last year (definitely star-tracking) but then 0.78 this year - regression, and disappointing. Yes, I know he's on a crappy team, but young players put up points on crappy teams, every year.
I don't think he's ever going to be a top player in the league, more like a top 10 for points, maybe topping out at something like a Pastrnak level - great, but not what many are expecting/seeing.
Just my opinion.

I agree 100%. Another big measuring stick is how he will do in the playoffs. I could see him having his struggles, much like Mitch Marner.

Maybe if he had a few more, the Leafs would know what Round 2 looks like

You can stop defending him. He’s not coming to Calgary and you will go back to calling him soft.

You called him the most overrated player in the league
If he makes the HOF he certainly isn’t the most overrated player in the league - and I’ve shown stats that his first year he was generational , and 2nd year was at a level that 50% of guys who have achieved in the last 25 years are HOF players
To me that doesn’t say overrated at all - and certainly not most overated player in the league

First of all, one year of stats is not 'generational'.
Otherwise, you think he'll be a superstar - great. That’s an opinion, and I have expressed mine. We are talking about the future, so you've 'shown' nothing. Relax, they're opinions.

No, he really wouldn't. Conroy is not an idiot, you don't change a potential generational defenseman for a guy trending to be a first line winger who might be able to play centre. A player that you might have for a few more years before he most likely leaves. Parekh right now is untouchable.
