Anyone see the Press Conferences from Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre. I am trying to figure out who is the adult and who has not quite made it to being an adult. Azure? Firebot? Doctorefever?

It's time to kick all the giant American multinationals out of Canada and Europe.
100% gross receipts tax on all the american tech and franchise companies should be a good start.
Google, Meta, Uber, AirBnb, McDonalds, Subway etc.
Either they stay in the markets hemoraging money. or they abandon the markets until trump leaves office at which point they'll never regain their market share.
If Americans would rather build automobiles then have a over represetative share of jobs like tech by all means lets let them.
At this point America has done generational damage to their global reputation.
30% of METAs revenue comes from Europe and Canada, what happens to their stock price when they lose that revenue and start posting losses again.

As someone who works for a giant American multinational company (not one listed), that would absolutely crater my family and cause mass job loss. As a simple example, Imagine how many people would lose jobs if every McDonalds in Canada closed - now multiply that by every other American chain. (Was going to list Tim Hortons but apparently they are owned by a Brazil-based company 3G Capital)

You cannot make an offer if Trumps aims aren't rationale and they just aren't, I aint saying you try to tee him off but there is nothing we can offer except joining the US and I'd rather be poor

This is defeatist thinking and along the same lines of the people running around saying 'elbows up', without thinking of the long-term implications of the US / Canada relationship.

What exactly can't we do? We already market products internationally to other markets that aren't the US. And if the US is going to start trade wars everywhere, then perhaps canadian made cars take the place of american made in EU markets, for example.
We have the people, management, and actual factories who have been making these very cars for these very markets for decades. They were just owned by corporations across the river (i'm very specifically referencing windsor-detroit here.)
IMO this is an excellent scenario. If Ford or GM are forced to sell or vacate destressed assets I hope there are canadian firms to take them up and start production.
|
No we don't. Our trade is categorically tied to the US. Yes, long term it would serve us well to diversify, but thank the Liberals and previous governments before them for not doing that.
Everyone thinks this is some quick switch, but it isn't. It would take years to wean ourselves off the American economy. Anyone here thinking it'll be otherwise is pretty bloody naive.
You also seem to be as ignorant to fall for the stupidity of 'Canadian auto manufacturing' that will somehow manage to NOT sell to the US.
Zero car manufacturers are going to invest a single dime into the Canadian economy if they can't produce here and sell to the US to take advantage of the dollar.

Oh right, typical dumb Liberal bull####.

And yet this is the line of thinking we keep running into because people literally don't understand how intertwined our countries are.

The Liberals are literally campaigning as if they can drop the trade barriers and do some quick auto manufacturing fix and we'll be golden.
What politician is being realistic about the hundreds of thousands of job that will be lost if this will continue? For that matter PP is being purposely ignorant as well.
Your post like many here just show the top 1% thinking that is the typical drivel when it comes to this issue.

Who said anything about short term? This would indeed take a decade to unfold. But, we are not the ones choosing to start this, we just have to choose to find a solid path out on the other end.
What is that abortion of a second rick bell paragraph you have going on there? You do know we have other trading partners right? We touch 2 oceans. We can put things on boats and deliver them anywhere. If the assets are distressed pre sale, and canadian companies/ entrepreneurs can found new companies to pick them up (as you may have read in my post), that's will create a potential capital cost advantage. If we also have low cost steal that's now available in market because american customers can't access it, you have another potential price lever.
We don't have to be beholden to the dollar, it's just been easier. We need to stop taking the easy past. This is a defeatist attitude.

It is literally the opposite of defeatist, defeatist is thinking there is something we can give to the US to make them start acting rationally, the UK has been gagging on Trump's schlong for months trying not to piss him off, net result is exactly the same boat that Canada is in, 25% tariffs
The US is not a rational actor right now and there is sod all you can do to counter a crazy persons argument, long term we need to drastically and permanently reduce our reliance on the US market

Lol, trying to find alternatives to the US vs. placating a tyrant down south is defeatist attitude? You might want to look up the meaning of that word. i don't think it means what you think it means.
