My phone from 2018 is giving up the ghost (rings, but you try to answer it, and it freezes - doing monthly resets/re-installs etc. Planned obsolescence.)
I get an email (Verizon) saying I can get a "free" upgrade without changing my plan. I know, I know, it's not free, and it'll be mostly a scam, but I need the new phone anyway.
It actually goes pretty smoothly. Of course you get to checkout and there is a specific line item for a "$35 upgrade fee". I delete the cart and start over, read the qualifying conditions, check out again - $35.
So I call (facepalm).
The guy (Anthony) is reasonably polite, and takes a "no" the first time with each upsell. I can respect that - he's gotta ask.
We reach the final page, he reads out the total. He includes the "upgrade fee" in his list of things.
I tell him "Hey, Anthony, remember the 5 times we talked about the "no upgrade fee? The whole reason I called you?".
His response?
"I'll waive that for you now".
So basically their customer service model is to charge you extra things, unless you get one of their guys on the phone, and they are willing to waive it. You specifically have to ASK to get what they offer.
I'm sure most people just decide to pay the extra fees. Hell, if I had known it was going to take an hour on the phone I would have paid the fee!
But f them for being such greedy scumbags.

As for TV, someone posted a very awesome solution in the Cutting the Cord thread and I've had that for Live TV (which TBH I hardly use) and my PlexShare to replace Netflix et al.
Are your side mirrors set correctly? This sounds like an easily fixable problem, I've never encountered this before.

Yeah, it was totally my fault, I thought it was a gap that I could slide into while I was coming up. It was in my blind spot, so should’ve checked. I didn’t think there was a little Golf with it’s wheels on the shoulder markers in the exit lane between two SUVs in bumper to bumper traffic, where all of the other cars were positioned in the centre or slightly left of centre.

In fairness, with every other vehicle being so friggin' massive these days, I am also starting to get kind of annoyed at all the small-ass vehicles. Particularly in parking lots that give me false hope of an open space only to realize it's some gnat-on-wheels parked there when I get close enough.

The solution is obvious, we need more small cars on the road. You'd be able to see the small cars if they weren't blocked by the massive ones.

My Mom needs to have a second hip replacement done. While waiting for the first one for over two years the strain on the other one was enough to cause her last good one to go. So they knew she needed both done before they could do the first one. She finally had one done last year and it all went well, she says thats the one part of her that feels really good.
So she gets a pile of tests done and this clinic says things look good and she was given a date to get the other one done. But it will be at the private ASG clinic. 1 week before this date they call and say it's too risky due to her age has to be in a hospital and another 40 weeks now....
It's annoying that they get her hopes up only to back out like this at the last minute. It's like they try to intentionally kill these older patients by playing mind games with them. Even last year they gave her a date...than a week before they call on a Monday and say you better come in tomorrow or you'll lose your date. Horrible way to treat people.

Do you say anything? I know people who snap and the staff all change their tunes, but other times that doesn't work. Not like she can get pushed back further?

I don't know if its arrogant or introvert or spectrum but communication can be a chore with most. And for surgeons you'd prefer someone a little sure of themselves rather than someone like me who is 300% questioning every decision I've made and will make all the time. Admin staff are chosen to be bulldogs to chase away work.
But yes be a C word. My nurse friends would absolutely agree. Not saying you haven't done that already Syl.

When my wife had an ovarian cyst every goddamned doctor said it was cancer, except the head oncologist, who was like 99% certain it wasn't, and actually said "I gotta tell the other doctors not to be so quick with the cancer diagnoses, esp. based off a test that measures abdominal irritation".

Damn that sucks. I think the general view is that all doctors know everything but it seems to be more of a specialty thing. I'm an engineer but if anything electrical comes up, I am a complete imbicile as with thousands of other engineer subjects. Maybe doctors are the same.
My cardiologist has told me for the past 15 years I was not allowed to lift more than 15 pounds and could not skate with my kids unless I wore a chest shield for fear of a puck hitting me, among other things about exertion, so I have lived an emasculated lame life for so long sleepless and scared. When I met my eventual surgeon for the first time I told him this in passing, thinking that was common advice. He started laughing saying "she told you that? HAHHAHA, She's an overprotective grandmother, complete nonsense".
I was relieved to hear it but at the same time I've wasted ten years of my life being scared to live, believing that, so now I am a little pissed off TBH.
That's why I cannot stand the "trust the science" phrase. Its a phrase by morons who don't understand science. There is not a hivemind of science, there are massive differences of opinion which makes it science by its design.
Science is about not trusting the science. You ever see the squabbles between professors in a faculty at a university? It's not a bunch of Jedis talking like Yoda to each other. Sorry for the rant.

To be fair, I think a lot of aspects about healthcare are more art than science. Or perhaps the interpretation of how to apply the science best. It sounds like your first doctor wasn't very good at applying it. But there is also a #### load of voodoo no one really understands, particularity when it comes to medicine. I'm not sure that has it make sense to not trust the science.
It's like how people have been convinced to not trust mainstream media by deceitful liars, and the alternative is ingesting mounds of feces. Which they seem happy enough to do. What's the alternative to not trusting medical science? Oh ya, horse paste.

For sure. Diagnosing things must be a beatch. Seems like doctors can never get skin issues figured out. So many times myself or others have had a rashes or breakout for multiple months and the 14 treatments with the doc do nothing. 3 seconds with the dermatologist and the cream instantly cures it after 1 application. I had a rashes/eczema all over my body for 8 months of trying g things. One 2 second visit to the dermatologist and that cream was like Gandalf curing it instantly. I used it once and kept the rest of the tube. Gone.

Man...my Doctor prescribes too much. I really like her for the most part, but there are times man...
"My shoulder hurts!"
- Go get an X-Ray at Emergency and here is a prescription for painkillers usually reserved for Elephants!
I'm not a Doctor or anything, nor do I play one on TV, but I think all of that is rather extreme...also, unless my arm is literally hanging by a thread? I'm not going to emergency. Thats for emergencies.
