I am torn.
I spent 7 months in Yugo walking on hard packed only. There were so many mines in our AO. From tiny anti-personnel to large anti-armour.
Funny story it was a mine field that caused me to execute a 35 point turn.
Mines are a very nasty weapon.
That being said countries like Finland et al, should keep good records of where their minefields are.
Mines are very effective and if used well, they often aren't even breached, but they can be used to funnel enemy into killing zones.
As a civilian in Alberta safe and sound I am anti-mines.
As a soldier that might face an invasion from Russia, I would be pro-mines.
Leondros, who were you working with?

A Colombian oil and gas producer (there’s not many of us). These mines are from the civil war. We have cleared almost 300 mines around villages as part of our social commitments. They are nasty!

Props to you for clearing them or having them cleared, wait you aren't doing it yourself are you?

What's funny about that?
Anybody else? If an invading army was coming to Calgary, would you be in favour of perimeter landmines? I would. I would rather stop them or funnel them (like UCB said) into a more defensible area.
Not sure what made Leondros laugh on that one. Mines are cheap and effective for mitigating an immediate threat/problem.

We are not - we work with the military once identified for disposal.

I already said I would but I reiterate that I would be in full favor of mining basically anything if we were about to be invaded.
I don't think my own backyard is in any way a reasonable or fair comparison to the international border or similar infrastructure corridors into major cities, but sure.

Because the imagine of you doing anything remotely useful in an invasion scenario made me laugh.

Sorry, didn’t mean to strike a nerve. Just the notion of a 6’4, ex-investor relations analyst turned small business owner digging a hole for an anti personnel mine is his backyard in Bonavista made me laugh. Especially if said mine happened to be beside his bunker. I fully admit I would be pretty gd useless if an invasion came.

I kinda envision Sliver leading a roving band of guerrilla's on mobility scooters.
The very definition of shoot and scoot.

Oh crap, I think we were talking at cross-purposes for a second there and I take responsibility and apologize for that.
Yeah, I'd be useless...especially once I was on about day two with no CPAP power. Plus my backyard has fake grass making digging difficult (particularly with a bad back).
I'm in favour of landmines if an invasion was imminent. I'm NOT in favour of laying them down myself. haha

People seem really optimistic about Canadians mounting a rebellion or guerilla warfare. I don't see that happening at all, sure there are a lot of guns here but there's not exactly an abundance of armed insurgents that have been living in a war-torn country their whole lives.
Who's putting these resistances together? What arms would we be using, uncle Joe's 30-6?

Doesn't every county sabotage and resist to a certain extent in every invasion, though? I think it's obvious there would be something. We're (humans) are territorial and patriotic. Just seems like a resistance would organically form. You never see a country just throw their hands up and accept invasion without varying degrees of pushback, no?

Indes is correct.
Canada has only about 3 Reg Force Regiments and those are not a full strength.
There are US bases that are larges than all the Canadian Military.
Canada does not have a large civilian population of vets, because our forces have always been understaffed.
Sorry Canada won't put up a successful guerilla war.

There are many forms of resistance, some of it is very peaceful and pacifist.
The story of Sophie Scholl immediately comes to mind.

I'm not a huge history buff but has a country as defenseless as Canada ever mounted a resistance? I mean Iraq, Pakistan, Ukraine - these countries all had a huge stable of trained people and weapons, varying degrees of training and equipment for sure. They had command structures in place for people to fold into, they had experience and the ability to unify against an aggressor.
We depend on the US for all of that. Our military wouldn't even be able to mobilize before we were taken over. The US would be in Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal & Ottawa before we even had a chance to respond. I do however admit that this is all just my thoughts on how things play out. I'm 35 and able bodied - if the Canadian army came knocking on my door and gave me a rifle and a mission, I would do my duty. But the way we operate I bet it would take the Canadian military 2 weeks to even get some basic kit together to get people into the meat grinder.
I just don't see it happening, it would be the opposite of Russia's "3 day military operation" where instead of it taking 3 years it would only take 12 hours.
