Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit in June, Le Journal de Quebec reported on March 17, citing a Canadian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

I'd love to catch a glimpse of him if he accepts the invite; but I wonder if everything would be kept top secret to protect him since the Russian would stop at nothing to eliminate him.
Top tier move by Carney to invite Zelenskyy while Trump clamors for his daddy Putin to be invited.

Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia declared their intentions to withdraw from the Ottawa Treaty today. Finland is apparently considering it as well.
The treaty is an agreement to not stockpile anti-personnel land mines. Currently, there are 160 countries that have signed on.
It's hard to blame them, but it's also a sign that the global order in coming apart more.

It was never a treaty that made much sense in the European context, especially for Finland. I was always against it and I hope our politicians stop collecting international brownie points over this.
The Ottawa treaty has been good for Africa, which is great, but their clusterclucks have nothing to with us. Our stockpiles aren't leaking to the international arms markets, and we're not fighting messy internal conflicts.
We have only ever had one potential enemy, and Russians have always been exactly the kind of enemy you want mines for. We also have kind of the perfect geography for anti-personnel mining, with the border being sparsely populated and full of forests where you can't really use vehicles.

The AP landmines have been very effective against the russian meatwaves. Zero issues with any country bordering russia loading up on them and using them to defend themselves.

Seems very ignorant and short sighted to me. We have cleared over 300 anti personnel landmines in Colombia in our operations. These things have killed hundreds and wounded thousands of people well after their main purpose, the majority being school aged children. But whatever, they are effective right?

A country like Finland will think that survival of their state depends on repelling a Russian invasion. And they would be right. Without nuclear weapons as a deterrent, they believe landmines will help them in that struggle.
When faced with a literal question of survival, it is reasonable to focus on the present danger (invasion, survival) vs the potential future dangers of the mines (civilian deaths and injuries).

Uhh... The alternative here is having virtually undefendable massive borders with an aggressive state that has already shown it will take away and move your children to siberia while grinding down your remaining population and infrastructure with meat wave assaults. They will likely even force your own children to become future participants in the meat waves if you hold out long enough!
I think the mines are totally warranted in these circumstances.

I'd like to take you to some of these villages who have to deal with them afterwards. There is a reason they were banned.

All you have to do is read the statements from Hunting Whale about his family in northern Ukraine in this very thread to understand, Leondros.

I would be for installing land mines on the southern border of Alberta if the US gets any more belligerent, so we will disagree.

With all due respect Leondros, how do you propose Finland resist an invasion? A firm tone?
It's not realistic to protect every inch of their frontier with manned artillery batteries.

All good, no disrespect taken. It’s just a weapon I’m firmly against. It’s something I put on par with mustard gas and other chemical warfare. It’s a cost to future generations that are 100% innocent and typically it impacts your civilians. After visiting a lot of the survivors it’s just something I can’t support after seeing first hand the devastation these things cause to kids not much older than my daughter.

Program them to auto-detonate on a specific day sometime in the future, and just make really sure you have it well circled on a couple calendars.

A modern and professional military will document where they place mines on their own territory so they can remove them in the future.
The problem is when an enemy military is in your territory and start placing mines as the frontline moves. They don't give a #### and that's where the biggest problem lies.
I have zero issue with Finland placing mines; they would be responsible about it. But if conflict broke out, it would be Russian mines that become a problem in the future.

Russia still uses petal mines they distribute through cluster munitions. They will mine your country with no thought about the aftereffect.

To answer your direct question, Finland has a great deal of money. I would recommend increased surveillance and unmanned drones to protect their frontier. That is also far more effective.
