My counter is, bring more to the conversation than vitriol and hatred.

Yes - and? At some point you become willing to cross a line and do things that are clearly evil to achieve some purpose, even if that purpose is hurting the people who hurt you.

Ultimately, I think there are a whole bunch of ways the current situation could go. One of them is an actual annexation, which I think would officially take very little time but would produce insurgency and terrorism from a bunch of people who are totally indistinguishable from Americans. In that circumstance, terror is the actual goal - making Americans live in fear. One of the tools of that is killing people who support the administration, or their families and friends, burning down their houses, etc.

Now, someone might argue that that actually serves the purposes of an authoritarian regime. It's a fair point. It also doesn't matter, because it doesn't change the reality of what will happen. In a circumstance where the country is actually annexed, admonishments like "now let's not become like the people we so despise" are completely pointless and ineffective - the people you're trying to convince are so far past philosophical debate, they'll be too busy making pipe bombs and figuring out where Tommy Tuberville likes to eat lunch.
