Just saw that China has also just retaliated against the U.S. with their own tariffs. Things are gonna get bad down there really quick, and Americans are gonna get pissed off.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/china-tariffs-us-farmers/

Quote:
China's retaliatory tariffs went into effect Monday, spelling trouble for American farmers by making U.S.-grown crops more expensive for their top purchaser.

Beijing imposed the levies in response to President Trump's extra 10% blanket tariff on Chinese goods. Under China's retaliatory action, U.S. farmers now face levies of 15% on chicken, wheat and corn, and 10% on soybeans, pork, beef and fruit.

China is the largest market for such products, and if prices of foreign-grown goods rise in China, locals will turn to less expensive alternatives either from China or other countries. American farmers that deal in chicken and more will likely lose market share as a result.

Obviously there has been plenty of tension between Canada and China in recent years and it's not ideal that the Trump Administration's actions are going to force us closer to a regime that's even worse than Trump's, but at this point, Ottawa really should be coordinating with Beijing about the tariff response and mutually easing trading restrictions. Simply helping Canada weather this storm, thereby undermining the WH strategy, can be part of China's response to the USA.

So the steel & aluminum tariffs are going through for other countries around the world starting tomorrow, and it sounds like the UK is bending the knee and their plan is to not retaliate to Trumps tariffs and just move on? What is up with that? Does the UK not trade much with the U.S. in regards to steel?

It’s a sad day when China is a safer, more reliable partner than the U.S.

Good luck to anyone in NA who has to shop for a new vehicle in the next couple of years.

For now. A year from now it's very possible the US is worse, possibly by a lot. Cause look how bad things are now and we're barely four Scaramuccis in. When we get to 20 Scaramuccis....yikes.

We could definitely leverage China with aligned interests, but we should be under no illusion they are partners in any way.

And he's also severely damaging his own economy at the same time, which is why he keeps rolling back some of the tariffs and doing these 30-day pauses over and over again.
Oh he'll look for an offramp soon and you can guarantee it will have to be one that makes it look like a win. The most idiotic part of the whole plan is that unless he's able to bypass the constitution and stay in power, 4 years is not enough time to ruin a country like Canada's economy (it will still take a blow for sure), but I really don't think the American people are going to tolerate the harm and inflation within their own borders that is going to come along with it.

At this point China isn't worse than Trump, China is less of a threat, less expansionist

Yep. Top comment deleted, which was actually very levelheaded and not even "left leaning". But it didn't praise Trump's decisions, so it got the axe.

Yeah. Let us have some of those cheap EV's with lower tariffs to replace all the Teslas.

Trump makes the steel and aluminum tariffs out like they are a 'World thing' when they are actually a 'Canada' thing. Of all countries that supply the US with Steel and Aluminum imports, Canada is the leading supplier by far in both categories.

A few stats from 2023:

~25% of all Steel used in the US is imported.

-Canada is 20%
-Brazil is 15%
-Mexico is 12%

~90% of the US's Aluminum needs are imported

-Canada is 41%
-China is 9%
-Mexico is 7%

The UK doesn't register as material in either of those places. Also note that the UK was treated preferentially on universal tariffs (Ie Trump has threatened 25% universal tariffs to Canada, Mexico, The EU, and additional tariffs were threatened on China). This is likely for 2 reasons 1.) The UK is Canada's other natural ally, treating them preferentially in trade creates a price for the UK to pay for any action defending Canada against the US in a dispute. (This explains the awkward interaction when Starmer was asked about Canada and subsequently deflected and Trump quickly interrupted to shut down his answer 2.)Straight up self-interest - Trump personally owns many business interests in the UK
