The Johnston/Rantanen duo makes sense to me as imo Rantanen was very comfortable with a RH center in MacKinnon, looked off with a LH center in Aho. Or maybe I'm just reading way too much into it, but I could definitely see the Stars trying those 2 together anyways for a trial run.

Not a bad deal by both sides. I do wonder if Rantanen will recover this year though. He should’ve flourished in Carolina and he should in Dallas but it’s hard to just turn it on so I don’t know how he’ll do. Next year no doubt he’ll adjust but this year is in question.

Do not understand what the Hurricanes did here. They gambled on Rantanen to go for it but then gave up when things didn't go their way. Are they retooling now because they're not a true contender. Just a top regular season team held back in the playoffs by goaltending and lack of finish when it matters.

Canes get fine asset value but screw their chances in the playoffs for this year at least. The Rantanen move was to make them contenders,

I'd be pretty confused if I was a Canes fan. Very good team, but took an obvious step back for this year's playoffs unless Stankoven does something insane. Just a weird month for that organization.

They're loading for future with this trade but I'm assuming they're hoping Stankoven will get more ice time in Carolina and start scoring. Stankoven was mostly burried in bottom 6 in Dallas. I can see Carolina giving him 2nd line RW duty.

Assuming that was before Rantanen's $96MM deal.

Where do they get the money for his 8x8? even with Benn coming off the books they have to look towards future years.

Maybe a deal for 2027 1st, Honzek + for a signed Johnston?

For sure, he will get a chance in the top 6.

But if you're the Canes, you had to figure you have a very good team that could do some damage in the playoffs.....now. Then they go from Necas to Rantanen to Stankoven and picks. It's just.........strange.

Johnston isn't going anywhere. He's a core piece of that team, probably their best player over the past month or two.

Strange, and I think I already saw that a few agents hate dealing with Dundon. Carolina should be going for a Cup and instead they get this.

Failed gamble for sure. Rantanen didn't do well for them and he wasn't going to sign there either. Good job to get something for him but this must be hard to swallow for the players.

What was Edmonton going to give up for anything half decent let alone elite talent like Rantanen? A bag of pucks unlimited perms for life? They're capped out and have zero assets to trade.

Good for Dallas, Flames seem to be using their rebuild as a blueprint. Dallas has hit on tons of picks with an elite goalie and now cashed in for an elite player long term. They kept their vets and have been in the playoff picture for many years. Gotta hope the flames have similar luck

This is a big risk for Dallas as well. Rantanen has now shown well when he is not playing with Nate.

I know they wanted to sign the player based on the price paid, but I would want to see more of the player on his own before committing this type of deal.

I think asset wise the Canes did pretty well considering.

Do we think the assets moved to the Avs would have brought this return? I don't.

Carolina made lemonade out of a lemon here.

They're emulating the 2000s-2010s San Jose model well. Icing a competitive team while supplementing it with great prospects along the way. That's how I want the Flames to operate if/when they become a contender.

Makes sense for both sides.

Likely with similar results, no cups

He did well in Colorado when MacKinnon was injured. He just didn't do well in Carolina under a much different style of play. You're only looking at recent and very limited information.
