Good deal for Johnston, becomes a UFA at a young age.

Damn. Good deal for Johnston though. Makes cash now, bets he will have a bigger payday in 5 years when he's 26.

Smart by Johnston to not go 8 IMO but keeps it manageable for Dallas

The contract landscape has changed now. I believe it would be 8 years around the same amount before the cap was announced to go way up, now it is 5 years for guys like Johnston.

For a guy this age it sets him up for a 8 year deal at big money for his next contract while providing good compensation now.
For Dallas it keeps the price down today and let's them get really good value out of what looks like a player who's production will only increase.

The Stars likely can not afford to pony up the extra $$ to buy any UFA years. As it stands right now the Stars have $15M in cap space for next year and they likely need to go get ~6 forwards as they only have 7 right now on the NHL roster that are under contract next season.
I assume a number of their prospects are ready to graduate but I doubt they want to have that many prospects all coming up at the same time.

What happens if Seguin is healthy? Is Duchene going to sign for $3 mil again. They are probably in trouble next year with that kind of raise.

Wonder how this impacts Zary and Coronato, Wolf as well.

Ya, a healthy Seguin makes the situation much worse for the Stars. Then they drop down to $5.3M in space and they still have 5-6 forward spots to fill.
They likely move out a D or 2 over the summer to make some room but I don't really see how they keep Duchene.
Bourque becomes an easy offer sheet target. $3M possibly breaks them?

Wolf's comparables are out there and its Swayman, Saros, Sorokin, not Johnston. Wolf should be at $8 per.
Johnston is a 0.95 PPG right shot C who's 21-years old. If anything it puts Zary and Coronato $7 or less.
The Flames will not have cap trouble for the foreseeable future.

Maybe we luck out and he signs to more of a Logan Thompson deal.
Likely depends how his season goes next year.

If Zary or Coronato contracts have a 7 in front of them, and arguably even a 6…..Conroy did a pretty poor job.

It's really not a big issue for them. Benn comes off the books along with Dadonov, Duchene and Granlund. Seguin may be destined for LTIR at some point too again if he can't finally get healthy for good.
That's ~20M that will be replaced by cheaper young talent the Stars always seem to be full of. They'll also likely attract a bargain bin UFA signing to balance it out.

I agree, I think that's their high max if they go long term. "Somebody" has been constant in pushing this narrative that all 3 will cost upwards of $24M (false) and eat up all the Flames cap space (also false).
