CP: Waa! Why don't players want to come to Calgary or have us on their NTC lists?

NK: (signs deal) I want to be in Calgary, I love it here, brought my family here, and want to win a cup here!

CP: Geez, why didn't Conroy trade Kadri to Colorado for the Nelson package when he had the chance?!?!

I don't think Conroy is saying this team is competing for a cup. He wants to keep the team in a competitive mindset on winning every night, and not having a dog-#### roster/mentality expecting to lose every night.

Just seeing how much seats are going up for next season. Flames may need to be buyers/go on a run to justify this jump.

We have different definitions of competitive then. Scraping into the playoffs and poor showings against top teams (look at the Florida game last week) aren’t my definition of competitive. We’re good enough to not be terrible is about the biggest positive I can give this team.

I’m not sure about the age anymore, Conroy was looking at 30 year old defenceman just last week. I’m losing confidence in him.

You nailed it.

Same thing happens with draft picks. Why don't the Flames take a swing on picks? WTF!!!! They drafted Hoskins, who the heck is this guy? I had X player slotted there after watching 5 minutes of youtube video.

I understand that but trading one vet shouldn’t have rest of team having mentality “expecting to lose every night” . I like Coleman, Anderson and Backlund but these are not 1st line players that should crumble your team. If it does IMO then the flames have a lot of problems. That said I don’t expect any of them traded.

I'm interested to see the return on Rantanen. Carolina is a much better team than the Flames. If they trade Rantanen for all futures and don't make another trade, this would be a prime example of a team that consistently is better than us in a similar market that makes the right decisions.

If the return on your players isn't great fine let's go for playoffs, but if we can actually get some big-name prospects and 1sts for a guy like Andersson, you need to do it.

Posters who want Conroy to deal kadri should also tell us how that message should be delivered.

After a year of telling them to work hard and push, I don’t want my gm going into the room of a playoff team and telling them nah they won’t win so he’s pulling the plug.

And what about other years when the team is making the playoffs a bit more comfortably but isn’t really a ‘contender’… do you still want Craig to sell valuable pieces because the team is very unlikely to win the cup?

That’s not how you get groups of people to work towards and outcome.

We’re gonna play meaningful games over the next 45 days, just miss the playoffs and we are gonna wind up 3 to 5th after some lottery luck!! GFG

Wouldn’t that be a kicker. Wind up 11 win lottery, draft hagens, mqueen or frondell.

Sure, impossible scenarios are ok to dream for!

As long as we're dreaming for impossible scenarios, I hope ownership complete 180s on trying to manage this team. I hope that I haven't been right all along and what we're seeing is not just the same ol' calgary flames management style for the last 30 years but boy does it sure look like a duck and quack like a duck.

Fair question but the issue is right now most of the guys have trade protection or hard to move contracts. Andersson is the one guy that could go, and it seems like Conroy has a price that either needs to be met or not.

Kadria, Coleman have levels of trade protection that restrict things, even if there was an appetite to move them. I suspect if either player communicated they had interest in moving on, with an expanded set of teams they were willing to go to - there would be more activity.

Carolina would be stupid to trade Rantanen for futures, their window is now. Comparing where they are and where we are is apples to oranges.

If we don't wind up bottom 10, Montreal gets the pick why is this so hard for people to understand? We can't wind up 11 and win the lottery.

Unlikely the Flames will have a pick that is lottery eligible.

How do other teams do it? Carolina, I bet traded Necas because contract talks didn't go well in the summer and they made a push, Rantanen wouldn't sign so they are now shopping him, and I bet they make a move that is good long term rather than short term. How do they sell that to a team full of players who thought they were cup contenders? Flames were never a cup contending team.

If I'm a young flame, I'm pumped for new opportunities if a vet is moved, and I work hard because I'm in the NHL trying to earn a contract or spot on the roster.
