I think Flames fans need to understand that neither Marner or Rantanen will be receptive to signing in Calgary regardless of how much money the Flames throw at them.

The same thing happened with Iginla and Kipper. The Flames refuse to see the writing on the wall and make proactive instead of reactive moves. It’s one of the reasons they stay in limbo.
Imagine if they dealt iggy and kipper when they clearly should have. At least 2 years before they moved iggy.
The Flames can’t replace talent like the teams in Florida or other desirable destinations can. Therefore, they can’t afford to mismanage assets.
Gaudreau 100% should have been traded. That was gross negligence.
Not getting young blue chip prospects for Tkachuk was unforgivable. Pick a lane!
I love Conroy and his vision for team building. I’m cautiously optimistic for the future. I just hope ownership doesn’t meddle with a lipstick on a pig move to try to gain 2 games of playoff revenue.
|
How was getting Weegar and Huberdeau for Tkachuk not “picking a lane”, especially when combined with signing Kadri? It just wasn’t the lane you wanted. And if Huberdeau put up points like he had the season before that Kane works fine. In hindsight, sure tearing it all down MIGHT have worked better (or not).

I have no idea why anyone would pick Marner over Rantanen, unless it’s purely based on his struggles with the ‘Canes. Rantanen is way bigger, way more physical, and affects the game on more fronts than Marner. Plus, he is a much better performer in both ends of the rink come playoff time.

Draft Pick
|
Will be a very interesting trade deadline and offseason.
1. Notably number of teams that have underperformed (Preds, Rangers, Van, Buffalo etc.)
2. Key player situations (Rantanen, Pettersson, Bouchard, Marner etc.)
3. Teams loading up on cap space and their own draft capital (offer sheets ??).
4. Our home town boys exceeding expectations - hopefully Connie sticks to the long term plan.
Feels like there could be some major shakeups and surprises.

In light of playing Dallas later today, who says no :
Andersson (50% retained)
For
Bishcel and Bourque

I'm not that high on Borque but this is a slam dunk. And it would increase the probability for the Flames to get another difference maker in the draft. I think the bottom would fall off if one of the vets are traded.

Dallas. They could get a depth dman for way less. Rasmus might not crack their top 4.

Even with everyone healthy, Rasmus would easily be their third best defender. I would slot him on the top pairing with Miro once everything settled.
The only reason I suggested him is that the fit seems ideal.

He's 100% not better than Heiskinen, Lindell or Harley.
The ship has sailed on a big return for Rasmus. He's not playing good at all for about a year and a bit.

Miro and Harley I agree 100% on. Both are better without a question. Not sure I agree on Esa Lindell however.

Crazy things seem most likely to happen at the TDL. Picks are less valued as some GMs get 'here and now' blinders on. As evidenced by the recent TBL GM quote.
So anything is possible. I'd like to know Conroy's ask for Ras. Any insiders know specifics?

0 chance we get Bichsel for Rasmus without adding. Sorry it's just way off IMO.
Bichsel is probably already better than Rasmus.
Maybe Bourque and a 2nd.
Lindell is much better than Rasmus as well.

I doubt I would trade Bichsel for Andersson, but let's be serious - he's played 19 career games and has 5 points. I think he will end up better than Andersson, who I find overrated, but probably not right now.

Rasmus isn't that good. How does he improve the Stars? 5 on 5 he doesn't create offense. He isn't going to be asked to shut down the other team's top line like Lindell does and he will not be on the PP and isn't good on the PK. He's good to eat minutes in a sheltered role against lessor competition. He could thrive in that role, but you can get guys like that for way cheaper.
Bichsel is better IMO at this point, does it really matter if he has played 19 games or not? He's better right now even if most of us haven't seen enough of him yet to form that opinion.

I would expect Marner will be plan B for all teams lining up to sign Rantanen. I'd like to think there's no way any NHL GM would actually prioritize Marner over Rantanen but a lot of NHL GM's are pretty bad at their jobs for the most part.

Will be interesting if they move him for less than they spent to get him, vs keeping him as a rental. I don't think anyone will pay more than what Carolina already did to acquire him, so accepted loss vs rental then lose him anyway. Tricky.

Very busy start to the morning.
The chaos has intensified, Andersson is a very hot commodity at this point.
ON a personal note, I do hope we trade him.
#1 - I don't want to pay him the reported 8+M he's asking for
#2 - With any retention he's the most coveted asset right now in terms of top 4 potential. His value will never be higher.

Which teams need/want him the most?
I also want him traded. The term and AAV will be too high IMO
