Ratanen and Marner are tough for me. Feels a couple years too early. The Flames have Wolf and Parehk coming along nicely but they're not quite there.

They do desperately need some elite forward talent and soon though.

I think you take the swing on both and see if one sticks. It's a likely miss anyways.

Now they're a middle of the pack team again led by a bunch of aging vets. Deja Vu.
come on now

I too would have discussions with Marner's camp and at least gauge his interest for the right price.

Getting elite level talent on this team again is important.

He would help Coronato develop into a perennial 30 or 40 goal scorer.

I wonder if we can trade for a guy like Tage Thompson and sign one of Rantanen or Marner in UFA.

I would be down with that plan if the Flames really want to retool.

Was that team poised to go deep in the playoffs? Ie to justify an own rental?

The same thing happened with Iginla and Kipper. The Flames refuse to see the writing on the wall and make proactive instead of reactive moves. It’s one of the reasons they stay in limbo.

Imagine if they dealt iggy and kipper when they clearly should have. At least 2 years before they moved iggy.

The Flames can’t replace talent like the teams in Florida or other desirable destinations can. Therefore, they can’t afford to mismanage assets.

Gaudreau 100% should have been traded. That was gross negligence.
Not getting young blue chip prospects for Tkachuk was unforgivable. Pick a lane!

I love Conroy and his vision for team building. I’m cautiously optimistic for the future. I just hope ownership doesn’t meddle with a lipstick on a pig move to try to gain 2 games of playoff revenue.

Are you even serious? They were 50-21-11, pacific division champions, and 3rd in the west with 111 points.

Injuries and Markstrom sucking in round 2 did them in but they were certainly in go for it mode. For christ sake it was their second best regular season in franchise history next to 89 lol.

Iggy had a full NMC for his contract, Kipper had a full NMC until the 2012-13 season which was his last with CGY. They could just stay in CGY, or have full control of the destination the way Iggy did.

It would've been extremely difficult to trade Gaudreau during the pandemic in a cap strapped league, coming off two somewhat lackluster seasons(18G and 58P; 19G and 49P)... It would've been even more difficult to break the best line in the NHL midseason, of a team that was a clear contender, and CGY's best shot at a cup since 2004.

Hindsight is great, but there was a lot more affecting the decisions not to sell at the time.

Also the Flames drafting and development during the Kipper and Iggy years resulted in a total of 1 1st rounder in Backlund turning into an impact NHLer. Jankowski, Baertschi, Erixon, Nemisz, Irving, Pelech and Chucko were the 7 whiffs on 1st rounders! We would've just gotten more of this type of player the way we did with Klimchuk and Poirier from trading Iginla and Bouwmeester.

You seem to be the type of person who would complain with almost any circumstance.

As Dino pointed out, they were in the midst of the franchises second best season ever. As DO pointed out, Gaudreau had led or engaged with the Flames to the point the team to believed he was coming back. Let’s not forget in the weeks leading up to free agency, Conroy went on air and said he thought Gaudreau was resigning. Was he wrong, did he lie, or did he just say what he and presumably others in the organization thought?

GM’s take risks. They have to, it’s basically their job. None of them are right all the time. You also neglect what ownership may have had to say at that time. Were they on board with throwing the towel in at that point? Doubt it. The Flames built a contender. They weren’t trading one of their best players. Period.

Basically your argument is the Flames should trade any pending UFA. Do you think that would work? How? In this make-believe world you’ve imagined are the Flames contenders today, or are they just different?
