People around here don't seem to see the impact of bottoming out. It takes 5+ years to recover financially as an owner. They don't get merch sales, playoff revenue and the list goes on.
More oilers 97/29 jersey were sold in Alberta than any flames jersey in the last 10 years. I also would bet you that in the "youth market" that disparity would be even higher and the "youth" are your market in 10 years.

I don't disagree with you, but a small nitpick that the Oilers got 97 and 29 by bottoming out. For a long time.

I fully recognize I'm wearing the 'fan' hat and not an owner one. I can't speak for the merchandise sales etc., but I also know these owners have thriving businesses outside of the Flames, and securing the top flight talent (97 and 29 were top 5 picks) where they will REALLY benefit often requires years of hardship first.
I think of the 10 year+ effect of the 04 run in this market. That type of excitement is worth chasing at all costs, IMO.

So why aim to retool to build a mediocre team that won't be able to compete for division titles and cups and just take the pain now.
You either get Brent Sutter hockey with fans yawing in the stands and tuning out and not caring, or you try to build an exciting team to sell the jerseys.

If I'm being really honest with myself, my favorite thing about Andersson is his goal stares.. I personally prefer him to be gone at the deadline but I doubt it will happen.

The league also has revenue sharing, so it's not like it's all bleak and they take all the losses.
Most owners don't buy teams to make huge profits anyways.

I’m definitely in the trade Andersson camp. I don’t think he’s a player I’d be comfortable signing long term into his 30’s.

I'm in the trade him, but there is no rush because we have him under contract another year camp.

Return has got to make sense. I'm not sure his play this year has put him at a premium unless the market's willing to pay it out of desperation.

His best value was most likely at the 25 draft, 2 years retained a 2.25M cap hit.
Before this season. If you keep holding on until next season you may depreciate his value into a Carlo.

Worst case he will get a Hanifin like return at the deadline next year.

If we resign Rasmus - his cap hit better start with a 6. I think we will be getting ripped off pretty fast even if it started with a 7. I know most people disagree with me - which is why I am on the trade him ASAP boat.

I expect him to get more than Hanifin did.

Don’t think that was a strategy though. It was due to complete incompetence.
Which is different.

What stars did we have in 04 outside of Iginla and Kiprusoff? We didn’t draft them.

He is going to get 8 plus most likely. Rising cap, plus we are feeding him #1dman minutes.
If we got him for 6 you keep him and you have a 2nd pairing guy along with Bahl once Parekh comes. But we need to find him a partner as well.

2004 was fun, but the team going foward still needed to add some young centers and players to surround the team.
Mistake 1 was when Sutter starring at a center with our draft pick traded back and took a winger who fed of that center in the BCHL.
He did trade for a good player in Langkow. But he also turned around and traded away younger players and made the team older and slower when the league came back with rules to make the game faster. Which was totally bizarre since the 04 team was a speedy group who caused havoc on the forecheck.
Dion was the other star who fizzled quickly.
The biggest issue was the team had no set plan and didn't value the draft. It was constant rotation of players in and out. Focus yearly changed from we need to score more, to we need to defend better.
Never had that #1 center. Outside of the 1 year with Keenan, the team was always flirting with what is now known as a wildcard spot.

With the cap going up, other teams are likely offering Andersson a contract starting with an 8.
