Jack Layton was 100% a narcissist. Go watch the video of him in the bar when Canada won the gold medal in 2010. Literally pushes someone out of the way so he can get on camera.
People have a lot of love for Layton posthumously, but he's the reason the NDP moved from being a working class and labour party to whatever they are now.
EDIT: I actually kinda put Layton in the same boat as PP a bit. Not in terms of policy or character. Just that both were/are more about slogans than policy.
Yeah, I forgot about that, some lady was cheering for Canada after they scored the goal and jack put her arm down so that he could get on TV.
Yeah, I get that argument. My response would be what's the point of being relevant if you sell out the things you stand for? The NDP's role has always been to get concessions in minority governments. They're never going to run the country because there's still too much red scare stuff in this country.
The dumbest thing Singh did is not make proportional representation a condition of the supply and confidence deal.
But why do they have to be? If we were talking about the Green Party, sure. But at the time, Layton getting to official opposition status showed that 'red scare' stuff -- at least federally -- was exactly that; an unfounded scare. The federal Liberals certainly had enough woeful finishes and ran enough losers with Dion and Ignatieff that they were looking pretty bad, but I don't think Mulcair was the right guy, and then the Liberals struck gold with the Trudeau brand right as the CPC overplayed their hand with a majority. If not for Layton's untimely passing, I wonder if the NDP might actually have maintained that momentum.
I think there was more appetite for a stronger NDP federally in Layton's day than there is now. Granted, we're at a uniquely stupid period in history now, politically, but who's to say a continued strong showing with Layton at the helm wouldn't have perhaps had the effect the last few decades have had in Alberta politics? The Alberta NDP hadn't been relevant in Alberta politics since they got dummied in the 1993 provincial election, suddenly they get a competent leader and a PC party that had enough stink on it and they managed to win 2015; they've been in the conversation ever since.

IMO Layton not passing away when he did is one of the most interesting alternate timelines in Canadian politics to hypothesize about what could have been.

Well no. They only won because the right was split.

That's a bit of a falsehood when you consider that the PCs and WRP both had huge slices of the popular vote pie in the 2012 election too, and the PCs still won. Neither the WRP or PCs matched their popular vote totals from 2012; hell, the PCs didn't even get as many votes as the WRP had in the previous election. The AB NDP going from 127,074 votes in 2012 to 604,518 votes in 2015... that sheer volume and to which party it went (ie: not the AB Libs) cannot simply be handwaved away as consequence of a split right vote.
In any case, that's a distraction and not an obstacle to my point, which is that it was the AB NDP capitalized on the situation -- the PCs turmoil and scandal leading up to the election which is what caused the right to fracture between the PCs and WRP in the first place -- to leap-frog the perennially second-place AB Liberals (save for 2012) and become a relevant party in Alberta. Today, the AB Liberals are irrelevant.
The Jack Layton as leader of the Federal NDP getting as far as official opposition showed promise, but the leadership following his passing IMO was subpar and it shows in that all the momentum was short-lived.
PP breaks his silence and... it took him how long to issue such a flaccid response? He doesn't even sound like he believes it when he says it, like someone else wrote it for him, he gets to the part that says "and that's true" and is caught off-guard.

lmao watching him shift from his normal droopy face when he started to switching into campaign mode fake smile and wide eyes when he brought up Carney was hilarious.

Blaming Canada, and not Trump, for the tariffs. Read the room dude. A while ago I thought it was going to be a CPC landslide, now this guy is trying his best to lose the election outright. It could be an incredible collapse.
Never mind the very public actions the government was taking to lessening the impact of the tariffs while simultaneously trying to prevent them.
Poillievre has a chance to have one of the most embarrassing election losses in modern western democratic history if he doesn't even get a minority with how much a stranglehold he had three months ago.

I almost think he knew what kind of ####show was coming and that’s why he was trying to force an early election. And the Liberals and NDP were trying to delay as long as possible so the ####show would rub off on him. Plus Jag’s pension of course.

Fuzz - "He didn't speak to the media before the election, either."
You have to feel for this guy. All he needed to do was play it safe and he was looking at a surefire landslide majority victory. Now, thanks to Trump, it looks like a Conservative minority at best, and we could be looking at a Liberal minority propped up by the NDP again.

The only feeling I get is joy.
