The only reason why this team isn't bottom 10 or bottom 5 right now is because of Wolf IMO. I don't think most people expected the Flames to be battling for a playoff spot in March.
So yeah, that puts the team in a different position now. If things had gone like many predicted, I think Conroy would have been more of a seller. But you can't hold back Wolf, so now he has to pivot.
It's also really hard for small market Canadian team to completely bottom out. Based on the low age of free agency now, you have 7 years before your top picks can make themselves eligible fore free agency, which is doable, but any set backs can cook you. It's easier in larger and southern markets that have more gravity for attracting players to fill in gaps if there are set backs, or just to stay on even if there are set backs. Unfortunately, Calgary and other similar markets don't have that luxury. So if you have something like a young star goalie, you might as well try to run with it.
I was all for tanking before the season, but I just don't see it as an option now, unless you embrace lunacy and trade Wolf to make sure you can tank.

Yes I absolutely agree that what I said was a ridiculous, asinine position. Cobra, Jiri, any comments or notes here?

I have no desire to engage with someone who mis-represents the points that are being made. At no point did I call him a terrible player.
The site has a quote function that you can use if you want to actually reference what I actually said. And I don't think anything I said was inaccurate about Dylan Strome as a player.

I am not even talking about selling, its the not buying and spending picks. Stick to the plan. If Wolf is the only reason we are in the position we that should be enough evidence that we don't have a good enough team to be in the mix.
Goalies can have bad years, and rookies can have sophomore slumps.
Its pretty clear the team needs stars up front and a #1 center. You can't win without them.

Y'know i did look back, and this is accurate, so I am sorry. I had your comment and Cobra's mixed up, or rather had you making one of cobra's comments that were interspersed. So I am sorry.

I'm assuming we are talking different goals.

I think most people think the playoff picture will be more clear at the end of this road trip - making the decisions on trade deadline day a little easier… either the flames will do well on the road trip or do poorly… but I think its just as likely (if not more likely) for it to be just as murky as it is now if they finish the trip 1 point in or out of the playoffs.

I fully expect Craig to be adding should we win the next few games.
There was almost some big news today but I’m told it’s not happening now, not sure what the hang up is or was sadly. Can’t be shared with me.
I don’t have any names to share but was told it was as big or bigger than the trade with Philly.
Maybe that was part of Sec’s gifs, not sure but his info could be better than mine on this one.

The OT goal in the final, was Makar to Marner, Marner to Mcdavid.

Not sure what to think about the Rantanen thing. Local media (Steinberg, Leslie) has been hinting at this too. I don't think his age or his position are the right fit for this team's window.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Flames end up as a bottom-10 team next season, even if Wolf plays well.
Backlund, Kadri, and Coleman are all at the age where decline could hit hard, which could drag the team down.
That said, I expect the Flames to start making some big moves soon. They won’t stay a low-cap team forever—we're currently in the "retooling" phase, and they won’t let it drag on indefinitely. Big moves could keep us in the status quo (mid...) as these older guys drop off.
For this team to be a contender and break out of the mid over the next decade we need three things:
-Wolf to keep doing what he's doing
-Parehk to become a legit #1 D
-Develop some form of dynamic offense that can get us in the top half of league scoring. By committee, hitting a homerun trade or having some guys in the system hitting their max ceiling (e.g. Coronato becoming a consistent 40g guy)

Sounds like a team made an offer that Conroy liked, but it probably required someone to waive their no trade clause and that didn't happen.
I wonder if this has anything to do with that Fitzgerald calling Conroy rumour from the four nations cup break.

Them going hard for Rantanan is probably them looking to help solve that third point.
Have to think the only factor that could attract Rantanan here over anywhere else, is if he's money driven and we pay him the most..

Rantanen will probably have multiple offers of $14M+ * 7 years. So he will probably look at who has the best shot at a cup(s) during the contract and who his lines mates will be.
Unless Kadri was a father figure to him, why would Rantanen come here?

Nothing better for a culture team than to bring in a UFA who turned down contracts on legit contenders to ensure he would be paid the most...

How many times has that account been right?
On his other points Flames might go long term on Frost if the numbers work? Why would we trade for someone to drive them to free agency.
Also said he hasn't heard anything about Coronato or Zary while Royle9 says they will be signed long term.
I'll take our guys word.
