Is Con Air the greatest action movie ever? It's certainly top 10 for me, just an absurd premise that on paper shouldn't work as well as it does. Nic Cage with his glorious mullet, and Trisha Yearwood with the theme song. To me Con Air is cinema
No.
I mean, its a fun 90s action flick that is better than most and can boast Cage and Malkovich just chewing the scenery alongside good performances from Cusack and Chief O'Brien...Ving Rhames was....well he was Ving Rhames and then theres Trejo and the inimitable Buscemi!!
I always loves me some Buscemi!
And lets not forget Dave Chapelle.
So, fun premise, really good cast, but 'greatest action movie ever?' I'm not sure its in that conversation.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I think we should do a CP greatest action movie poll similar to the top prospects poll. T2, Die Hard, Con Air, Mad Max Fury Road, Matrix, Predator, Speed, Aliens let's include them all

You'd have to define the terms a little more stringently.
In my opinion John Wick was about the perfect action movie. Followed closely by Die Hard.
Mad Max? I dont really see it as a pure 'action' film, its more along the lines of an Epic. Dont get me wrong, its magnificent, but not really of the same genre as things like Predator or Speed, its more...I dont know the term, I think its higher and more than that.

The original Planet of the Apes movies from the 60's and 70's.
I love T2, it blends action and sci-fi. I would put movies like First Blood, Die Hard, Speed in the pure action genre.
Predator by definition is sci-fi, but the way they used the alien as merely an enemy with no backstory or plot development makes it feel a bit like pure action.
The planet of the apes movies were great (some of them) but I wouldn’t consider them action movies.
Watched "The Order" last night. Filmed in and around Calgary starring Jude Law. Good little white supremacist heist movie set in the 80s- Fun spotting the local landmarks

Are you talking the schlocky Stallone one or the Karl Urban North American let's say "homage" to The Raid? The latter was decent for a 3D film for sure.
The Karl Urban one? Oh I love that movie. I love that he went the whole film with the helmet on...in character! Perfect!
I think 'Action' took an evolutionary step sometime in the late 80s or so, and so there has to be a distinction. Things like Rambo, etc. were the classical definition of an 'Action' movie but in a way I think T2 really re-defined it as a genre that needs more than relentless action and explosions.
And I've said it before, but in the modern era? I think John Wick is essentially a 'perfect' action movie. Good Hero, great fights, I love the attention to bullet detail, simple motivation, beautifully shot and just straight-forward.
"You stole my car and killed my dog. Now I'm going to ruin your world."
Perfect. Alright. Fair enough. Lets buckle up!

I mean, that's kind of the plot to First Blood, instead of it being a minor thing like a dead dog, they literally arrest him without reason, abuse him while in custody, trigger his PTSD from 'nam, and then attempt to murder him in cold blood when he went on the run. The beautiful part about that movie is that his response is entirely justified. John Wick is a psychopath in comparison.

John Wick is a psychopath. Thats why I really, really like him.
With most psychopaths they cant render or feel emotion they can merely mimic it. With the rare psychopath they have this ability to turn their emotions on and off when they want to.
John Wick was a psychopath, but he cared about his Wife, his dog, his car and his house. The rest of the world could burn as far as he cared.

Sheesh that's tough. Does Heat count? Because I don't think there's better action sequences made. Including the amazing gun Fu of John Wick.
Maybe the Matrix.
What about Indiana Jones? Lost Ark or Last Crusade.
Predator was Mentioned, Aliens?
Gladiator?
So many to choose from.
My favorite Rambo wasn't even first blood, it was III when he went against the Russians in Afghanistan.
Should VanDamme get some.mentions?
Do Wu Shu movies count because there's Crouching Tiger, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Hard Boiled, IP Man and on and on and on..
Don't know if Payback counts as action but it was the blue print for John Wick.
