Three more years retained after this year, Calgary could stomach that.
This also frees up some cap space for Buffalo. I thought I heard they wanted to make a splash in free agency. They could do that along with stocking up on first round picks.

I don’t see the roster spot for Cozens as I don’t view him as a #1 center now or in the near future. The center depth for the flames in the next few years could look like:
???
Frost
Zary
Kadri (assuming a Backlund retirement)
Adding Cozens just creates a log jam in the middle of the roster. That would force one guy to play too far up the lineup and I’d rather we don’t pay heavy in draft picks for that.

The whole point of getting Cozens is so the Flames will play him as a #1C. Maybe they send Kadri to the Avs or Leafs if he is willing as well.

I’m sure they know far better than I do, but we’ve seen this team jump the gun on a rebuild before. This feels like a step in that direction again, and unless they are damn sure he can be an elite center (either be a top scorer or a defensive minded Barkov style center) I’d hope they pass and keep the picks.

Sure would be nice to have Kadri mentor Cozens and help him develop into a better player.

Agreed but Buffalo doesn’t want futures and I fail to see how the Flames are a fit unless they are trading Zary

No it would be 4. He signed a 7 year deal and this is only year 3 there are 4 full years left on that deal after this year.

We can afford to eat Kadri salary. If other players develop in a couple years, Mittelstadt can be moved for more futures.
|
You do a trade like that and you will be moving players for futures for many years, probably a decade or so. Kadri is far and away the best player in the deal and eating 12 million in salary is probably worth a 1st round pick on its own. Mittelstadt has almost no value and we are throwing in a first. Severe overpayment by the Flames, 2 firsts, a second and Kadri for that is awful. Often times when youngish players suck and are far inferior to older players it is just because the younger players suck and the older players are better.
Another benefit of that deal is that the Flames add almost 9 million to their cap and that would likely make it more difficult to sign their young players to long term contracts. Just brutal all around.

Might as well play Frost as the number one center, they both have the same probability of being number one centers.
If the Flames are trying to make a splash and remain focused on rebuilding I would far prefer them to try to sign Marner in the offseason and keep their current assets than trade a bunch for Cozens.

Exactly my thoughts as well, you wrote it out far better than I did.

I agree, I don’t really get the hype around Cozens but Conroy has been pretty solid on his trades so far so I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

3 way trade is the only way I see this getting done. I still feel like this rumor; like others have mentioned might be a smoke screen. I'm still holding faith that while we are looking this way the Con man is working to get us a Mason Mctavish. (I know he would cost a lot but this guy is a game changer) I'll put down the pipe now! Have a great day Flames fans!

Cozens would be one of the top 3 centers, that and he is the much needed right handed center
Flames however just don't have the assets for this trade...

The hype is he has the upside and tools to be a #1 power forward C. If he becomes that is another story.

For sure. I just don’t think he does. The other people who popped after leaving Buffalo weren’t regressing. I still think Buffalo ends up keeping him unless they want Dach or something

Cozens is a good target but only if the price is right.
Hes not a sell the farm and go all in piece.
If they're trading for him with a price associated with a future potential 1c then it's going to be a bad deal.

I agree with most of this but something reeks about this player. Best to stay away completely imo.

Nazem Kadri has value at 3 years/$21M.
Zero need for retention unless the acquiring team wants to give us more.
But there really shouldn’t be any hurry to get out from under Kadri’s deal.

Exactly this, just keep Kadri and his 60-70 points a year. No need to trade him for an inferior player.

I don’t know why people are saying he has 3 years left when it is clearly 4 after this year. 4yr $28M
