I have to plead ignorance on this one; I don't know anything about various grades of oil, if that's even the correct term.

Part of me thinks that sick #### wants to make it worse for Canadians under the guise of "fighting back", because surely our own PM must know how tariffs work.
At least I think he does...

I am curious about the other perspective to this. So you would think a boycott to American products/resources is the path to take vs tariffs? Such as American liquors? or various other products. I'm just curious and intrigued about all perspectives.

I was about to say this. Might be good long term for Alberta to agree to go along with tariffs on energy in exchange for all the provinces agreeing to allow the Feds (with or without private partners) to build 2-3 more pipelines to get less reliant on the US, funded by the tariff money.

You understand that American importers are responsible for paying the tariffs, right? Probably not.
I've already made it public that I voted for Chase Oliver, Joe Kerr, and Adam Schiff.

No one will suffer from Trump's tariffs more than Americans. Especially since it's being placed on all of their biggest/most direct trade partners.
Trump supporters literally think customs agents will be walking up to the Canadian government with collection jars but those collections are coming at the expense of American companies who must adjust costs to accommodate those fees.
I wonder how he plans to claim that he "reversed inflation" when everything imported (which is a lot) skyrockets in price.

Trumpers shouldn’t be allowed here. They’ve declared themselves our enemy. They are trying to harm us. Fk these clowns.

haha, I just read that part of this is that they removed the "de minimis" exemption for small packages. So say you send a gift to someone in the US...they have to pay the tariff of 25% on that!

Sure, happy to oblige. I think the Canadian government has a duty to do the best thing for Canadian citizens, which is to not harm them. If I were them I would do nothing.
Trump doing this to our three biggest trade partners simply hurts American consumers. Why would you want to raise prices for your own consumers? It's senseless and leads to an inefficient allocation of resources. Chinese, Mexicans, and Canadians can bring unique goods and services to market at a better price than Americans can, and they're all things that we desire. Trump is lying when he claims "we don't need them", because if we could get these things for cheaper we would already be doing it.
So if they're happy to trade with us, why not do it? It really should have nothing to do with the government as it's obvious interference between parties willing to trade.
If I were Canada I certainly would not want to increase prices on my own consumers in an attempt to demonstrate some false sense of strength.

It's a demonstration of how difficult it is to disprove a false claim.

The Canadian government would implement Tariffs only on items that are luxuries that can be easily replaced. Like we can drink local whiskey rather than a bourbon that comes from a red state, ect. This isn't a false sense of power, this strategy has worked in the past. Here is the thing, Americans seem to think they are immune to everything until they find out. Its a pattern.

I wonder what the chances are that Trudeau uses this opportunity to declare a state of economic emergency and defer the election to 2026…
