Good point. I read that Conroy would want to or should want to reward the team for their play. I think a reward for this team for their play would be to keep them together and not ship out someone like Andersson. They made it this far together, let them finish the season.

So let's say they do add at the deadline.
And let's also say they suck next year (very possible)
You do realize they can still trade vets and load up on picks next year right? That what they do this year doesn't force them into doing the same thing every year?
It's almost like people are capable of analysing the situation and acting accordingly by adjusting to the results and circumstances, as opposed to blindly following a pre-determined plan forever, regardless of actual outcomes.

Let's be honest. Next year is when we want to suck so we up our chances landing McKenna.

Fast forward to 2026
‘Let's be honest. Next year is when we want to suck so we up our chances landing Dupont’.
Fear we may never land one of these truly elite players….

Yeah I'm not sure how the Flames are supposed to suck with Wolf in net.
If this was Vladar putting up a .925 this year out of nowhere then I'd say - please trade him for a King's Ransom as a pending UFA so we can suck this year and don't overpay him for 30 good games.
But it's Wolf...who was 2 time WHL goalie of the year, 2 time AHL goalie of the year, AHL MVP, and now probably should be in the Calder and Vezina discussion this year.
Unfortunately a top 5 pick looks unlikely...but so is getting a goalie that's potentially a top 5 goalie in the NHL in the 7th round...so you just have to draft and build around him as well as you possibly can.

I don't know about that. The team is likely to get worse next year and hopefully infuse more young players.
Younger team more mistakes, and Wolf can't play every game or cover every error.
Hopefully we get some luck on our side.

Dostal has a .910 sv% and the ducks are sitting in 28th.
The flames could still suck next year and pick high woth wolf.
I'd hate to waste 4-5 years of wolf scrapping bottom though.
I do hope Conroy makes a deal for a young top 6 center at some point. Otherwise we might be waiting 4+ years for that us to draft and develop that kid.

Not sure about that,
there is a chance the veterans will remain untouched (i.e. Kadri, Backlund, Coleman, Hubereau, Weegar, Bahl etc...)
Questions are around Andersson and Vladar, and depth players.
If anything, Flames may acquire the much needed right handed center,
Team could finish very similar (i.e. wild card contender that finishes just in or just out)

I tend to think they're exceeding their abilities, but they could just as easily be better next year:
- Another year of Coronato/Zary/Pelletier/Pospisil improvements
- Another promising prospect in place of a struggling Kuzmenko
- A better fourth line centre
- Sharangovich performing like he has the last couple weeks, and like 2023/24
- More games for Wolf to start the season
- Huberdeau simply maintaining his pace, now that he seems to be enjoying himself again.
It'll hurt if they trade Andersson, as I do think he and Weegar have stabilized the d, and Coleman, Backlund and Kadri could take a small step back, but doubt their regression would offset the potential gains.
Again, this could all be smoke and mirrors, but they continue to play well.

Backlund is on the last year of his deal decisions will have to be made.
A playoff appearance brings heightened expectations and if you make a move those expectations rise even more. Just look at the last time they got Hamilton and ended up picking 6th.
This seems to always happens. When we have no expectations we surprise everyone and when we come in expecting to do something they falter.
Not expecting the vets to get better and at some point they will regress. Who is playing below expectations? Sharangovich that’s about it.
Team is already one of the lowest scoring teams and one of the worst pK in the league.

Yep, yet my guess they are likely still in the middle somewhere.
Flames won't tank,
No matter how much the Fans may want to see it.
I would guess, they will fix the issues at center in the offseason.

Don't see how we are worse next year. Unless they trade Andersson and do absolutely nothing to fix the defense.

Guys like Zary and Coronato could easily have an off year. Wolf too.

We need to remember, development is not linear. It's possible to have a strong rookie year and then fall back, and then readjust and get better again. MacKinnon dipped down, and others have to.
With goalies, it is even more non-linear, because quite often shooters figure out the goalies a little bit the more they see them, and then the goalie even has to adjust again. The Flames could get worse next year, or they could get better, or they could be the same. It's really a long-term game.

Guys are having off years this year.
Not to mention we'd have like 30 million in cap space

Who is having an off year? We need the cap space to sign our own players as well.

Lol@all the experts that told us this was a bottom 5 team now scolding us that they are worse next year. I dont see it. Team has a lot of quality players in the system and will add more. Plus Wolf with a better backup.
