Imagine wasting a year and a half on this to come away as the 'Outlaws' (one of the most bland sports team names imaginable) or 'Mammoth' (already a professional lacrosse team).
Doesn't really work for a fan chant though? To me it comes across as a plain lack of effort to come up with something fans can rally behind and identify with. When you look at the Flames, their promo/media involves flames. It's a major marketing opportunity missed. Here's our mascot. It's a hockey!
I think there are ways around it.
"Let's go Utah" still works, or other options.
And in terms of a "theme" I think you can still do it. You can still have a mountains/yeti/mammoth theme/brand around the team without having to officially call the team one of those things.

They could buy the Ottawa Renegades branding package for cheap cheap.
The major city is named after the body of water next to it but "Lakers" won't fly. They could call it by what it isn't i.e. a sea. Calling them the Not Seas would instantly put them at the top of the list to become America's Hockey Team. Musk has already created a team salute.
