Necas has come down to earth. He was neck and neck in the scoring race and now he is 22 points back.

It might be now because of Wolf. There might not be another option if the team wants to keep Andersson, Kadri and Coleman.

It comes down to how do the flames get a top 10 centre in the league? I think that is the most important part of any team being successful. You need a top centreman. The options to get one are:

1. Draft one in the top 10 of a good draft
2. Draft one outside the top 10 of a draft
3. Trade for one when they are a proven top centre in the league.
4. Trade for a distressed asset that at one point was projected to be a top centre but has not lived up to it (eg. Cozens or Zegras)
5. Sign one in free agency.

#1 likely takes a scorched earth rebuild and is no guarantee of working out. It needs to be a Bedard/Cellebrini/McKenna draft with high-end centres in it. Don’t think this year is one of those IMO. If you are bad at the right time and get some lottery luck, this one is the surest way to make it happen.

#2 can happen to any team but is rare. Hard to plan this way of acquiring one because it means a player exceeds what was ever projected for them by pretty much everyone. Not saying it can’t happen but it’s really tough.

#3 is tough because virtually all top centres have a NTC and will not waive to go to Calgary

#4 is a gamble but can pay off. Depends so much on the player and the environment they have been in. Every metric tells us that Cozens is a 3rd line forward except his rookie season production and his draft pedigree. But you could have said the same thing about Kakko and he’s turned into a first line forward in Seattle. There are examples of things turning the other way though - Pulljarvi is a recent one. Everyone thought it was the situation he was in but it turns out he’s just not that good of a player.

#5 is really tough because Calgary is not a preferred destination and the flames would have to overpay to get someone to sign. Also, it’s very rare for top centres to make it to free agency. I think Tavares was the last one to do it.

If the flames don’t make any moves to drop in the standings this year or next year, I think their only options for trying to get a top centre are options #2 and #4.

It wasn’t going into the season. We will see if that has changed.

How does that jive with $20M in cap space?

If they start spending assets to add at the deadline, that would support your assertion. But so far, nothing they have done for the past year or more aligns with it.

In the absence of any big trades at this year's TDL, I'm hoping Conroy sticks to his plan of not losing assets for nothing and gets what he reasonably can return out of the upcoming UFAs. It won't be much - if any see Kuzmenko, Andrei - but some 3rds/4ths/5ths wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Push them out to future years. Take back some bad contracts so you don't completely gut the Wranglers' playoff run.

He still has 51 points in 46 games. That would be a pretty decent addition to our roster.

Don't let facts and reality mess with their narrative!

If Conroy can successfully lobby for the nhl to go back to a 9 round draft he might be able to squeeze out a late pick from someone for Kuzy

Someone just told me that Kotkaniemi and Roslovic are being held out of tonight’s game for “trade related reasons”. Anyone else hear this?

Broberg and Holloway would look pretty sick in Flames colours right about now, Broberg with Weegs and Holloways 36 points would be leading the flames in scoring

The Barn Burner argument was interesting today. Some good points came out of the argument. Boomer, Pinder, Rhett and Frank talked about the Flames not being able to bottom out because of Wolf. They said this does not change the timeline of the build. (In other words, Conroy is going to be patient and isn’t going to be active in trying to make this team competitive now. Frank says Conroy should be basically inactive at the deadline.) However, the Flames likely need to augment returns from the draft by doing well in areas other than the draft (trades for long-term, younger players; using cap space to get more futures, etc.), to build successfully, as a result of not being able to draft where impact players are more likely to be drafted.

Also, just after 1:09:00 run time, Frank said the Flames probably couldn’t get Mavrik “Mavrik Bourque and some other assets” for Andersson.

Finally, Frank talked about the Flames and Buffalo not being logical trade partners in the context of a discussion about Dylan Cozens.

I wouldn't expect much on the Kuzmenko front. With how his season has been going he might not get any attention from other teams or his best offer might be "future considerations". At which point you may as well keep him on the team and see if he can help win a game or two down the stretch.

Our best player to 'sell' at the deadline may be Vladar and I doubt they move him if we are in the playoff position.

Otherwise our biggest asset would be cap space. We could broker a trade to retain some cap space on an expiring contract in order to get some futures or we could take on a bad contract if it is bundled with a good pick or prospect.

I wasn't clear with my original post - I don't see Kuz getting the Flames any return based on his play-to-date.

Someone on TSN Vancouver radio said that the JT Miller leave was a team suggested leave after Miller had a confrontation with someone on the team.

I feel like the sens make sense for trade partners for us.

They're due to lose a pick and have an abundance or young centers.

We have an abundance of picks.

Makes alot of sense to me.

We have an abundance of picks ? I count 8 in each of 25 and 26. We should be adding picks not trading them.

Freidman speculates the JT deal that fell through was for Chytil, Lindgren and a 1st with a ton of protection.

Even if the flames draft a future NHL center this year, it will most likely take 2-4 years until he's in the NHL, let alone an impact maker.

For example, Kadri didn't start hitting his stride until d+5 year. Backlund his d+6.

It doesn't seem like were going to get a celebrini or bedard anything soon.

The flames are most likely going to try trading for a young center at some point.

And yes we had 10 draft picks last draft. 8 the one coming up. And 9 the one after that.
It is a surplus of draft picks.

I agree though, hopefully we get more.
