It’s all spilled milk now but it shows that the timing of this team’s rebuild would have been perfect if it started in summer 2022 when Gaudreau and Tkachuk left. If the team pivoted to a rebuild instead of trying to stay where they were they likely would have been in the mix for Bedard and Celebrini. Would have meant trading Hanifin and Lindholm that same summer when they were worth their peak values. Also would have meant not trading Monahan and not signing Kadri. Team could be on an upswing now with Wolf timing out to be a star goaltender.

Again, hindsight is 20/20 and it’s obviously a lot more complicated than that. Who knows.

Nikishin and KK for Miller seems fair. Carolina needs to make a splash if they want to win in the playoffs.
I don't think any of that matters. Miller is a huge risk for a handful of reasons and Vancouver has little to no leverage at all.

1. Miller has had character issues follow him around his entire career. That locker room is in total disarray and is from all accounts past the point of no return
2. Miller has had to take a personal leave this very season.
3. Miller has a full NMC and controls when and where he goes
4. Miller is having a very pedestrian season (8 goals..)
5. Miller is signed until he is 37 years old at 8M per season

Nikishin is a top 5-10 prospect in the NHL at the moment and isn't being dealt for another team's headache/problem regardless of how talented they may be.

Vancouver isn't going to get a "fair" deal done here.

These are good points. Maybe something as simple as:

KK + 1st round pick + depth defenceman

Vancouver isn't going to win this trade, with him having a NMC. They just need to cut their losses and move on. The longer they keep them in the dressing room, the more it's going to divide that team. A trade should have already happened.

Have they ruled out group therapy between Miller and Pettersson? Half joking…

Sounds like the offers aren't there for the Canucks, so they're trying to walk it back a bit.

Sucks for the flames if the canucks calm things down.

not really, they need to remove the distraction...not doing it because the offers aren't there don't make things better for them

Yup, I would anticipate that Miller is moved before the weekend. Cannot see this going on longer than that regardless of the return.

Yeah, I'm not saying they will be able to. I'm just saying if they do.

They were going to get immediately worse if they traded Miller. They weren't going to get any equal caliber player back.

Hopefully it just continues to implode.

Would have been an interesting 'What If?' for sure. In this scenario, I will assume the rumored Canes package was chosen instead of Florida (Necas, 2023 1st - turned out to be LW Bradley Nadeau).

Our lineup today would be:
Zary - Necas - Sharongovich
Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
Pelletier - Monahan - Pospisil
x - x - x

Bahl - Anderson
x - x
x - x

Wolf

We would be better off offensively, worse off defensively. We would have a young centre in the mix (Necas). We would have more depth in the system based on 2 years of poorer performance (+Nadeau). We would have 3 1st round picks this year instead of 2.

I agree this would have been the right approach.

Some of these proposals are for more return than people think Andersson would garner. That's insane. Miller is a really good player but he's 32 and has $48M left on his contract. Andersson is 28 and would be not much more than replacement-level cost, with retention.

Would you trade Coronato (Jarvis) + Coleman (JK) + 1st for Miller? No bloody way.

I think Mika for JT was likely the best offer, with some cap stuff to even it out.

Mika's contract is super bonus heavy. So low dollars but full cap hit, am I right?

Yeah. And there would be the real potential of having one of Bedard, Celebrini, Smith, Carlsson or Fantilli in the system assuming the flames bottomed out in 2023 and 2024.

Like you said, it’s an interesting “What If” but you never know how things will go. I’m just speaking to the tough spot the rebuild plan has right now because Wolf is already a top 5 goaltender in the league. Of all the positions to have a star player in, that’s the one that can pretty much single-handedly keep a team from bottoming out. Pretty much everything else on the roster has been designed for a bottom finish (lack of top line players, poor depth on defence and low team salary). But Wolf is too good to let that happen.

It’s a good problem to have I guess because I’m very happy the flames have Wolf. It just makes the direction of the team difficult to navigate. The team would need to be further gutted down by trading Andersson, Coleman and Kadri to counteract Wolf’s elite numbers if he keeps them up next year.

Even then, Zary’s production could take a step and reach or exceed Kadri’s current production (replacing the loss of Kadri). And Coronato already exceeds Coleman’s offence. Guys like Klapka, Stromgren or Honzek could replace the production of Coleman next year as well. There is no player in the system likely ready to take on Andersson’s role as early as next season unless someone like Brz, Poirier, Solovyov or Parekh take a big leap with an opportunity.

It kind of ties back to what Pinder was saying… if the flames re-sign Andersson and keep Kadri and Coleman, what’s the expection/hope for next season? I imagine it’s to be pretty much what they are now. You could plan for Zary and Coronato to take on bigger roles but that will likely be at the expense of opportunities for say Kadri or Sharangovich so the production likely evens itself out. What’s the step to being more than a bubble team if the plan is not to bottom out next year? Or is it to just be a bubble team?

Zibinijad won’t waive his NMC to leave the Rangers.

When has Carolina ever over paid in a trade? If they are involved now that really shows the value for Miller is not very high.

I think it will be middle 6 center, depth d-man, pick/prospect when it's actually completed.

Rangers:
Chytil + Lindgren + 1st/Prospect

Hurricanes:
Kotkaniemi + Chatfield + 1st/Prospect

Devils:
Mercer + ???

I honestly think make the playoffs and anything can happen is the strategic plan for the franchise.

It would have been challenging to bottom out harder than the Ducks, Blackhawks, Sharks, Blue Jackets, and Canadiens.

I doubt things turn out that way.

Far too simplistic to think ‘of only’ and then dream up whatever scenario it is you chose to believe.

Fact is, and I think history bears this out, the Flsmes would have never tanked and instead of doing all those moves they would have been trying to get better and compete every year.
