If they lose Ryan, who fills in for McDavid while he serves his suspension?

We have tons of young guys waiting for an opportunity. I would not pick up Ryan

Who?

Stromgren (a winger) and...?

The Flames have kinda already brought up their young forwards banging down the door. They were low on centres down there to begin with.

Clark Bishop isn't young; Sam Morton looks just OK. Who else?

Leave him on waivers if only because picking him up helps the Oilers.

Does it though? He's only making 900k so if he makes it through waivers they can bury his cap hit and call him up in the playoffs if they want.

We should also keep in mind this is the same team that would rather pay Klingberg more to be a 7D and give up one of their few Fs that can PK.

Claim him and waive Rooney if necessary. For the 9 minutes per game that Rooney is currently playing, at least Ryan is (or at least was) good positionally and can win faceoffs.

Could also be a great FO teacher for Sharangovich, Posposil, and Zary.

The Oilers as always have terrible depth. The piece they felt was the least value to their terrible depth is apparently Derek Ryan. If he's not good enough for the Oilers depth, he's probably not suited for the NHL anymore. Hard pass.

They should claim him for humanitarian reasons.

Honzek is a little cold offensively right now but I'd rather him at centre or Kerins than 38 year old Derek Ryan.

And that's a fair argument. But saying he would be taking a spot from a kid isn't.

It is a Rooney / Ryan choice.

This is a weak argument. Holloway couldn't crack that awful bottom 6 either.

It's only a weak argument if you pretend Holloway wasn't 22

It's a weak argument if you understand that their bottom 6 are poorly utilized

I would love Ryan back for the rest of this year. If Stromgren comes up, he needs to play third line or above.

(I would also be interested in giving Bishop the fourth line C assignment, if they don’t claim Ryan.)

Holloway played 38 games for the Oilers last year as a 22-year-old, and 51 games the year before. The problem wasn't that he couldn't crack the roster. The problem was that they refused to pay him, and foolishly lost him to an offer sheet.

I wasn't blaming Holloway, I was blaming the Oilers

I know. But you were saying Holloway couldn't crack the Oilers' bottom 6, which is not exactly true.

The Oilers lost Holloway in the off season because he got a better offer and they had already blown all their cap space. If the Oilers lose Ryan, it will be because they voluntarily threw him away in mid-season. The two cases are not really comparable.
