Thanks Royle.
Kind of relieved if the price was going to be as high as most speculated. Pretty much any young quality centers in the NHL right now they could had by trade either cost a ton (Petterson) or have too many flaws that’s it a big risk to trade young players and high picks for them (Cozens, Zegras and Wright).
Overall, I’d rager just be patient and get players through draft and/or trade vets (Andersson for example) to teams to acquire center prospects not in the NHL yet.

I'd be curious to hear if Columbus and Waddell feel the same way--as six months is a pretty small amount of hindsight in a 20 year career.
Lindstrom's back was the big question mark when he was drafted with talk that he might fall to Calgary at 9. Columbus took him anyway, and they would have done their due diligence.
I doubt if the last six months would really change their thinking. GMs and teams are typically a lot more patient with players than fans and surgery can be pretty effective these days (Eichel had a much more significant back surgery as an example).

I think if he comes back fully healthy I’d still put him around the hagens misa Schaefer value. So at best it’s a wash, at worst it’s brutal imo

Just tells you hard it is to move up. If Andersson and our 1st gets you into the top 5 you, do it every day.
If he goes to a contender, you get a last 1st and prospect anyways.

Pretty sure it was just the 3 1st round picks.
But MacKinnon was projected as a potential generational player - not all #1s are created equal. Trading a #5 this year is almost as far from MacKinnon as it is from a late 1st

I get it and yeah, it's a potential oof with where Chicago is trending this year... but at that draft, it was possible that Chicago finished 10-15 this year, so to me it's more just about Lindstrom's long term and how he turns out. Columbus liked him a lot, as they didn't only pass on Chicago's deal, but every other available player at pick 3 -- and there were a lot of good ones they could have picked.
If the team was still being run by Kekäläinen, then I'd be thinking the same thing, but Waddell seems to know what he's doing, so I suspect they're a little less concerned at this point.
EDIT: Seriously, if I were a Columbus fan and they traded the third overall pick last year for Chicago's first the next year, I'd have been pissed. Your trading a guaranteed top 3 for potentially something much, much worse?

I wonder if Ottawa moves out for basically nothing a guy like Norris and then takes a run at a guy like Miller or EP

I’d rather take a shot at Pinto if he’s cheap. Just don’t know how he fits after Zary is back.

The best thing to do is to lose as much as possible and hope for that lottery pick to hit. That would be franchise changing, especially in next years draft.
Winning a cup would be possible one day. You need those elite type picks to win and I would be ecstatic.

That’s knowing where the Hawks are sitting now though. If they traded their first I bet they would have been a lot more aggressive on roster improvements. Too big of a gamble for a GM to take.

I'd take Norris for nothing, even with that contract. I think that he has put the worst of his injury behind him.

Would it be a waste or too costly to trade for Pinto with the intention of making him the 4th line center in place of Rooney? The flames could really use an improvement on the metrics of the fourth line and Pinto’s advanced numbers are solid.
Up the middle this year (once Zary is back):
Kadri
Backlund
Zary
Pinto
Up the middle in 2025-2026:
Kadri
Zary
Backlund
Pinto
Up the middle in 2026-2027:
Zary
Kadri
Pinto

If it’s not Calgary, I will hope for Vegas to go on a run to the cup final. Mostly because it means denying the oilers a chance but also because Vegas has been susceptible to the Stanley cup hangover in the past… missing the playoffs one year and almost missing another year.
They are also an older team that is injury prone. Injuries to Eichel and/or Stine could be devastating to them. Besides the flames winning the cup in this year, the next best scenario is Vegas winning it and then having a rough season next year to end up gifting the flames McKenna without ever bottoming out.

Believe you’re right. It was the Flames three first round picks for 1OA.

Vegas wins the cup this year, then is so poor the next year they win the lottery and give 1OA to the Flames?
From first to worst in a single season. Has this ever happened in pro sports anywhere, ever?
……actually, the CFL exists. Never mind, good point.

Even if they just miss the playoffs, that pick is that much more valuable. Any potential shot at McKenna is going to be impossible to acquire the closer it gets to the lottery

Heard a McKenna rumour on the weekend, that he's been offered an 'NIL' contract worth $850k to go play NCAA next season (Denver, maybe?). Anyone else heard if this is a thing?
