I doubt they did it for optics.
They like the player. They see him being part of the solution.
If that's the case, then I'd say that seems like poor player evaluation. 1.5 of the last 2.5 seasons show Sharangovich to not be worth the contract extension that the Flames handed out.

Definitely too early to judge, I don't think it's trending well, and yeah - I'm not a fan of when they handed out that extension.

21/22: 14.3% iSH%, 52.9% xGF, 44.3% GF, 10.8% On Ice
22/23: 9.9% iSH%, 52.4% xGF, 45.6% GF, 8.9% On Ice
23/24: 17.3% iSH%, 48.6% xGF, 39.0% GF, 10.7% On Ice

24/25: 8.5% iSH%, 51.7% xGF, 42.1% GF, 6.2% On Ice

The biggest outliers on this page are his individual and on-ice shooting percentage this season.

I'd agree with you more if they went and gave him $6.5M+ but $5.75M x 5 for a guy that has the skill to score 30 on his good seasons is still not a terrible contract and seemed like pretty fair value at the time.

I also think he's playing through some nagging injury the team hasn't disclosed. Because it is weird that they haven't used him much on the PK this year even with the team struggling on the PK. He's averaged 58 second per game on the PK this year, and has the best xGA per 60 of all forwards that have PKed for at least 30 minutes this year.

Last year (especially after the Lindholm trade) he was playing over 1:30 per game on the PK and had the best xGA per 60 on the team and led the team in shorthanded points with 7.

So not sure why they haven't used him more on the PK this year (they need to use Pelletier there more too, he was an elite PKer for the Wranglers)
The guy is due.

Any drive bys on Sharangovich won't age well when he finishes the season with 20 goals.

I hope you are right, but that's a tall order.

It's all between his ears. Not sure how he stops overthinking the game with such a packed schedule. Maybe he can solve it during the four nations break.

The Reality of that though is most of the players that would fit into that category have some form of no trade clause. I am fairly certain Buffalo is on almost all 10 team no trade lists.

His struggles being all year are a bit overstated too IMO.

He struggled for sure the first 4 games where he came back from injury, which was to be expected.

Then in November he actually had a pretty strong month, but was just a bit snakebit in terms of his on ice shooting percentage.

He was 5th on the team in xGF in November (50.6%), led the team with 5 goals, led the team with 51 shots, but had a team low 5.0% on-ice shooting percentage. So he was actually generating a lot in November (3.4 shots per game is a crazy pace, like 278 over 82 games is top 20 in the NHL), but had very bad on-ice luck that deflated his point totals. His own shooting being 10% wasn't terrible though.

Then the struggles really started in December, where he stopped generating shots, and the bad luck kept up too.

He only has 15 shots in the last 15 games in December and January, which is a huge drop from the 51 he had in the 15 games in November. He actually had strong underlying stats 53.15% but TBH looked lost on that line with Backlund a bit, and him and Coronato were just not a fit together at all.

So some of the struggles were actually the coaches trying to figure things out too I think. The Sharangovich-Backlund-Coronato line wasn't really a fit for him, the line had great possession (55.4%) but only scored 2 goals on 74 shots (2.70%) and he looked really lost in that time where he deferred to Backlund and Coronato a lot.

It's unfortunate that Zary got hurt because the Pelletier-Zary-Sharangovich line actually has shown a lot of promise with a 66.1% xGF, and 7% on ice shooting so far but he still wasn't shooting enough which has been the issue over the last 15 games.

Last game he was generating more and getting his shot off with a bit more, so hopefully that can continue.

I 100% agree. That said they don’t have to trade him if all they can get back is picks and prospects that are years out. Unless he is a cancer in locker room I doubt they trade him this year. Especially if the main piece coming back is a winger.

Kind of glad to hear Andersson might want out since I really don’t want the flames to give him the extension he is eligible for.

Yeah I really hope they don't do the "let's try to convince Rasmus to stay" thing.

If he is being clear he doesn't want to re-sign them move him before this deadline and retain 50% to get the best return.

My understanding is Pagnotta isn’t as in tune or as close to it as other journalists are.

Certainly could be wrong though.

It's not really a surprise. For months Royale has been saying that the Flames would love to keep Andersson, but it doesn't seem like Andersson wants to be part of a re-build and would be open to moving to a contender.

It would be interesting to guess the 6 teams on Andersson's NTC though.

Oilers, Blackhawks, Sharks, Sabres, Flyers, Ducks.

Maybe Canadiens instead of Oilers because he feels confident that the Flames would never trade him to their biggest rival, which would give him a free slot in the list.

My only hope is conroy does not wait until next season has already started and tries to convince him to stay like he did with hanifin.

Mews had quite a month on a bad 67s team. Coincidentally it all came while Cameron was away ruining Team Canada. Now he goes to a powerhouse Sudbury team

Steinberg said they would trade him if he doesn’t want to re-sign but he did say by the 2026 deadline

I would be surprised if he doesn’t.

I believe it was Conroy’s last media availability, speaking with Stienberg, when asked about where things sit with Andersson, his words, ‘Rasmus is a Flame’. Now, he said the exact same thing about Gaudreau, so I’m sure he has learned. That said, if Conroy’s intention is to keep Andersson, I’m sure he will leave that door open as long as he can.

Also, as I mentioned, right now, Andersson isn’t even a footnote on CJ’s trade board.

In actuality, I think there’s very little discussion around Andersson.
