Is Joe Colborne on the list yet? He had some first round skill but not enough compete to make it count, and that was enough to make him a Mark Jankowski before there was a Mark Jankowski.

Florida just released their quarter century teams. Huby on the 1st and Jokinen on the 2nd. Two players who could be on our whipping boy teams. I think we should stop doing deals with Florida.

Edit: Forgot about Jokinen's brief stint in Phoenix before coming here. So I guess there's no curse there.

It did, but not by much. Rob was pretty close to coming here.

Stuart' s wife was (and probably still is) an American and couldn't come into Canada, or something similar to do with passport issues. Or maybe she didn't want to move here?

Anyways, it sounded like something the Flames didn't know about until after he got here, so he wasn't signing here long term after that season.

Whipping boy was definitely Erikkson, a 6th defenseman playing top 4 minutes to be the ying to Phaneuf's yang.

Bouwmeester is the name that comes to mind immediately. He was a serviceable defenseman but was brought in to make the Flames an elite team and then they obviously never delivered on that missing the playoffs every season until he was eventually traded for a relatively lackluster return.

Roman Turek was much maligned after signing his contract and the clock hit midnight.

Denis Gauthier was another victim of the early 2000s Flames lack of depth and was always seeming to draw the ire of fans. Although he did go out of his way to make big hits and got himself and the team in trouble.

The biggest whipping boy though was Phaneuf. Never reached expectations and the trade didn't help things.

Gauthier was a fan favorite for my friend circle and I. He could have his own rock em sock em tape with the heat seeking hip checks he would throw. For the same reason I have no ill will towards Zadorov either.

Boumeister was supposed to do for Calgary what Niedermeyer did for Anaheim. He was no where near that kind of player.

Daryll Sutter would be the coach of both the GOAT and the Whipping Boy team.

Might be the GM of both teams too.

I don’t think there’s any way this list could not have Kotalik on it.

I think he and Neal are the worst Flames I have seen.

I love threads like this. I’m going off my best recollection of fans’ whipping boys.
1st Team
Neal, Brouwer, Comeau
Grossman, Butler (the GOAT)
Elliot

2nd Team
Kotalik, Bourque, Chiasson
Zyuzin, Stuart
Markstrom

There should be a thread for all the lousy brothers we had (to put up with) while the better bros excelled on other teams.

Rob Niedermeyer
Val Bure

Etc etc

He went on to be great in St. Louis and won a cup.

The issue was the Brent Sutter is one of the worst coaches we have had. We gotta play the right way.

Joker should be on there. When we got him it was the 1C Iggy always needed, he then showed up for 2 games with such elite skill and energy. After that he soaked into the background. He was the late 2000s poster whipping boy, basically Pool Party’s predecessor

My memory is not what it used to be now, but I remember how HYPED I was when the news broke that the Flames FINALLY got Iginla a star center to play with, and I believe he arrived the next day to slot in on the top line with Iginla without practicing with the team since it was an afternoon game and Jokinen and Iginla proceeded to dominate that game with both guys getting on the scoreboard? That was an awesome 48 hours...
