South Korean 737 crash lands and explodes
This is insane. 2 survivors so far, which is hard to believe after watching the video

The airport is surrounded by a security wall. Doesn't look like they have any gravel runoff areas or anything. Agree, dumb.

With how fast they were going along with the gear up I’m not sure how well a collapsible safety area at the end of the runway would have worked.

Absolutely brutal. 179 dead? Horrific. Incredible there were any survivors.

Did it just crash into a wall at the end of the runway? What a horrific week for air travel. This and the Russian incident.

The wall likely protects a far greater amount of people then are on a plane

The Air Canada one looked pretty scary from the inside, too.

Maybe don't watch if you are a nervous flier.
Bad timing for this headline this week:

Another Boeing 737 involved in a major accident. Yikes!

Muan has a fairly short runway(9000 ft), not a good combination for a loaded 737 trying to land high speed without thrusters and no brakes. I'm more interested to find out why the pilot decided this landing, typically he would have known he had no gear/hydraulics 7 or 8 miles out and above 2000 ft. Possibly he had no choice but I think I would have tried a "Sullenberger" considering the airport is surrounded by water.

Makes me wonder what their alternate was and if that runway was longer

9,000 feet is hardly short

Looking at the charts, I wonder if it landed long since there's runway construction at the other end as well

It's not long for an international airport, Kelowna is about the same and they're lengthening it to over 10k to accommodate heavier aircraft.
Put it this way, if that plane belly landed in Calgary 189 people likely would have survived

It’s a smaller airport with mostly 737 and A320 familie flights. 9,000 feet is plenty. Kelowna is also 1,000 feet higher than Muan.
I’m just saying the crash happened yesterday. Let’s find out what the investigation discovers before we make every runway 20,000 feet.

I don't know a lot about aviation or what appropriate runway lengths should be, but YVR's runways are just slightly longer than 8,700 feet (Abbotsford's is around 9,700 feet). Pearson's longest runway is more than 11,000 feet. Calgary's longest is 14,000 feet. Just for comparison.
I guess it's just a luxury of having more available space.
