The airport is surrounded by a security wall. Doesn't look like they have any gravel runoff areas or anything. Agree, dumb.

With how fast they were going along with the gear up I’m not sure how well a collapsible safety area at the end of the runway would have worked.

Muan has a fairly short runway(9000 ft), not a good combination for a loaded 737 trying to land high speed without thrusters and no brakes. I'm more interested to find out why the pilot decided this landing, typically he would have known he had no gear/hydraulics 7 or 8 miles out and above 2000 ft. Possibly he had no choice but I think I would have tried a "Sullenberger" considering the airport is surrounded by water.

Put it this way, if that plane belly landed in Calgary 189 people likely would have survived

It’s a smaller airport with mostly 737 and A320 familie flights. 9,000 feet is plenty. Kelowna is also 1,000 feet higher than Muan.
I’m just saying the crash happened yesterday. Let’s find out what the investigation discovers before we make every runway 20,000 feet.

I don't know a lot about aviation or what appropriate runway lengths should be, but YVR's runways are just slightly longer than 8,700 feet (Abbotsford's is around 9,700 feet). Pearson's longest runway is more than 11,000 feet. Calgary's longest is 14,000 feet. Just for comparison.
