They also do the same thing they now do for Black Friday which is start the sale a week early to try to get a jump on people's wallets. I bought some "boxing day sale" shirts a couple days before Christmas.

The scumbag that caused the crash this morning on Macleod and Southland Drive RGMG's. From sources it sounds like this will end up being a double fatality just not announced yet, classic drug addict patheitc loser with a long rap sheet that had no business being out.
Beyond brutal and infuriating.

#### that picture is horrific, nevermind the kids hat dangling out the front.
What's the over under on a well known criminal to police, freed on bail after previous crimes.
https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...ital-busy-road
A tragic collision has claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl and left three other people in critical condition, Calgary police said late Thursday night.
Earlier in the day, police said the man whose reckless driving instigated five-vehicle pileup — shortly before 10 a.m. at the intersection of Macleod Trail and Southland Drive — had fled an attempted traffic stop after allegedly robbing a pharmacy and assaulting the business-owner earlier that morning.
“It was a horrific collision,” Scott Campbell, duty inspector for CPS, told reporters. “Thankfully, at this time there weren’t more people involved, but certainly our hearts go out to the families that were involved, because it’s really a horrific scene.”
Shortly before the crash, police had initially responded to reports of a robbery and assault at the Pharmasave Millrise off James McKevitt Road at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Boxing Day.

Well...in fairness, minivans are also notoriously safe vehicles.

180km/h on MacLeod in a minivan? In anything thats an outrageous speed and its preposterous on that road. The traffic, the lights, that is nuts!
Thats crazy. I hope they throw the book at that lunatic.

I do wonder how the police justify the chase in that scenario. I realize we want to catch bad guys, but at some point you probably stop chasing a guy who poses a massive threat to the general public?

Sounds like they did (assuming you weren’t counting HAWCS)
“Due to the amount of traffic and the nature of traffic at this time of year, no (on-ground) pursuit was initiated,” he said. “Rather, we continued to follow that stolen vehicle with the helicopter.

We see perps try to out run helicopter as well. Not sure the upside of getting these guys outweighs the downside of attempting to catch him but who am I to second guess. Being in fentanyl and morphine thermos week I don’t get why it’s such a high to chase and use this.

They don't. They use HAWCS.
The bad guys still drive like maniacs though.

Fundraising campaign set up for family of nine-year-old killed in Boxing Day crash
'We didn't want any financial burden on the family when they're dealing with as much as they're dealing with right now,' said Zara Wishloff, who set up the fundraiser.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-the-...jardins-family
Police say a suspect assaulted a pharmacist and then fled the area in a stolen vehicle. This caused a horrific 5 car crash that has killed Victoria ( 9 years old ) , and injured Madison ( 12 years old ) and their mom Amanda Reitmeier.
Amanda , and Madison are both in hospital being treated for multiple injuries.
We are looking to get Trevor Desjardin's family support to fund a funeral for Victoria as well as help with the long road of recovery that lays ahead for these ladies.
Any help would be appreciated .

I know its a touchy subject in Calgary, but isnt that usually when they throw down spike belts?
The helicopter works well but cant intervene really.
And, when Constable Sonnenberg was laying down a spike belt it was on Deerfoot, so I'm not Cop nor an expert, but they seemingly can cover several lanes?
Because yeah, you cant engage in a chase at that speed on that road, this isnt some dusty secondary highway in the middle of nowhere, there are shops and streetlights and businesses and traffic and pedestrians, etc.
Not to mention that at that point of MacLeod you're only about a block in either direction from residential areas.
I feel really bad for the girl, and, and this is rare for me, I feel really bad for the Cops. Like...thats got to make them feel fairly powerless.
What do you do in that scenario? You can follow the van by HAWCs and hope the guy does something stupid without hurting anyone else, like flips the van at an empty part of the street or something, but HAWCs cant really intervene to stop him, you cant chase him on the ground, anything you do will likely result in death or damage.
That is a lot of mass that is moving at a high velocity in a very dense part of the City and...without knowing the mental state of the driver...what do you do?
Hell, even going back to my spike belt theory...a minivan moving at that speed on MacLeod Trail? You pop those tires and that thing could go anywhere and plow into anything. Vans generally arent built to go that fast, it could veer in an uncontrollable direction, it could flip? You dont know who else might be in there? It could plow into a building or a group of bystanders.
At least in the Deerfoot/Sonnenberg scenario you've got an empty ditch on one side and a grassy median with guard-rails on the other, so you're kind of covered.
Thats messed. Just a crappy situation all around.

The other problem with spike belts is the off8cer needs to place it. I think in the deerfoot incident the driver swerved to miss the belt and hit the cop.

Yeah, thats a good point as well, at least on Deerfoot you could get a few KMs ahead and try and place it, MacLeod is a whole other ballgame.
It'd be really difficult to get ahead of a car going that speed down MacLeod Trail.
Now...if there were some way to be able to get HAWCs to be able to deploy a spike belt...that'd be something to think about.
You're safe in the air, you can get ahead of the car? It doesnt alleviate the potential of collateral damage though.
