Rooney and Deuhr should be on the above list.

Flames sent a 5th for Ryan Carpenter.
Rooney should get a late pick.

Spoke with a Sharks source and teams have started to call on Bowen Byram who is an RFA. Rumor is 4-5 teams have already inquired including the Sharks. Price is high at the moment.

...because it was deadline day and Brad Treliving had a draft pick burning a hole in his pocket. No other GM has spent more than a waiver claim on Carpenter before or after the Wizard but Treliving thought that 5th round pick just had more value on a depth player.

Using Brad Treliving trades as the water mark isn't a good idea.

It was a dumb hire the moment it was announced. That organization keeps hiring the wrong coach.

Point taken but on the flip side but Jason Gregor will sometimes point out that draft picks are the most overrated of all assets by fans.

A 5th round pick for a player, even a depth-tweener, is more than good odds. The question, I suppose is how often and when do you play that card.

I remember a trade like this that literally moved the needle in no direction other than backwards from a futures perspective… and then I look at a 5th round pick Like Luke Misa who is tearing the OHL apart and makes me appreciate Conroy’s vision and approach thus far that much more.

Friedman from this morning (his own speculation, not a rumor):

Elias Pettersen to Buffalo for Cozens and Byram.

His own "speculation" is often whats happening behind the scenes. Wouldn't shock me to this happen.

The problem with the Sabres is the Pegulas keep hiring GMs who are yes-men with little top management experience. They take a far more hands-on approach to the Sabres than they do the Bills.

Terrible for the Sabres. A sulky floater who shuts down in the playoffs and carries an $11.6 mil cap hit is the last thing the Sabres need. If they are intent on moving Cozens and Byram, they could auction them off separately and get core pieces back that don’t carry the baggage of Petterson.

Sabres have log jams at F and D with young players… they are due for a big trade for a stabilizing piece.

Yeah Petterson seems like the exact type of player the Sabres need to avoid. They need players with more leadership skills.

He was almost a PPG in the playoffs series before last year. I'd love for the Canucks to make that trade. Makes them worse and leaves them with JT Miller as their top centre and a big question mark in Cozens.

I just don't if petterson can play the grind it out game tochet wants in long run. Cozens amd Byram will add depth and might be more suited.

Idle speculation? Or track record for Connie with projects?

Kaapo Kakko was taken with the second overall pick in 2019, but could become a trade casualty as the free-falling Rangers (3-9 in their last 12 games) look to shake up their roster and salvage their season.

Why it would work

Calgary has been good with reclamation projects in recent years. They turned former bottom-six forward Yegor Sharangovich into a thirty-goal scorer. Depth defenseman Kevin Bahl has matched his career high in points in just 31 games with the Flames this season. Daniil Miromanov– previously a fringe NHL defenseman– has become a stalwart on Calgary’s blueline.

With that track record, it’s definitely possible that Calgary could get more out of Kakko than the Rangers have. Kakko might thrive in a low-pressure environment, free of the expectations he had in New York.

I'm not advocating for it, I just don't think Friedman throws out probabilities like this without some inside knowledge. I find that more often than not when he spitballs its with a wink and a nod.

Also helps gauge what a deal might look like if Calgary wanted Cozens and/or Byram.
