I'm the minority but I'm just not sold on McTavish as most on here. From the games I've watched him play, I just don't see that high ceiling to be giving up a Coronato/Zary/Honzek ++.

All I can say is that last night's performance could certainly have stoked the fire of trade talks. It's perfectly clear that the Flames are nowhere near to being playoff contenders, and there is no chance, even if they do get in, that they will beat any contending team.

Saying who won on trade like that is very difficult, Tkachuk wasn't gonna be a flame for 8 more years, did the Panthers get the better player yes they did.
|
Weegar, Huberdeau, and a 1st is still a win given the circumstances...the issues are what happened to Huberdeau and the first after. Its not like the Flames would be good if the deal was reversed tomorrow.

Yup, let's get that top-5 pick!!!
PS. Sitting by a fire is cozy. Cozy=Cozens. That's what Sec's post is saying.

That is a good interpretation. Maybe the flames are getting cozy.

If Conroy does decide to trade a first round pick for young players like Cozens or McTavish… I really, REALLY hope it’s using at most the Devils pick in 2025 and none of the other first round picks. After this whole fiasco with the Monahan trade, I don’t want to have to worry about how the flames are winning or losing… or how other teams are doing in future years that could potentially lead to giving up a high pick (1st to 16th overall) in a draft. At least this year, we could be pretty confident at this point that the Devils pick in the upcoming draft will likely be outside the top 20.
If Conroy were to trade the Vegas 2026 unprotected 1st round pick, he would be risking giving up a potential lottery pick in what could be the best draft in years with McKenna at the top. I know it’s unlikely that Vegas drops off that much but you never know. Vegas is an older team whose management takes big risks and they have lots of injury prone players as part of their core. An injury to Eichel and Stone could easily turn them into a lottery team next year. Even if Conroy put top ten protection on the Vegas pick, he would then likely owe the flames’ own first round pick in 2027 to another team in a scenario where Vegas ended up at the bottom of the league in 2026. The flames have a decent likelihood of picking high in the drafts for 2026 and 2027. Don’t open up any windows of possibility that they will be giving up those kind of picks.
It’s paranoia I know but I’m sick of stressing about where the flames or any other teams finish because of a trade made years ago that assumed where teams would finish multiple seasons into the future. It makes the rebuild much less enjoyable.

So are we starting trade for good players now?
The problem is the teams don't trade younger players for old players. They want draft picks and prospects.
If we trade Andersson, I want draft picks than Cozens.

I would be happy to see a package including a later 1st round pick moved for Cozens followed by an Andersson trade for a package that included a later 1st round pick.
Then you end up with a good young C that's 4+ years younger than the D you moved out which makes sense since the D prospect pool is pretty stacked while the C prospect pool is completely barren.
You probably end up with a net positive on picks as well, because while the 1sts in/out are probably basically a wash, Ras probably brings back more picks than you're sending out for Cozens.

Kadri is older now and not the player he once was. We also live in a cap world.
If we could get a 1st for him, he would have been traded by now. It's funny because I think there are a few on here who overrate the Flames players. We aren't talking about a Kadri in his prime here, he is 34.

I wonder if Barrett Hayton is becoming a great buy low candidate. He is now 24 and still doing nothing. I guess the risk is he continues to do nothing but he is a center.

Re: Dylan Cozens. Elliotte Friedman says multiple teams are interested based on the most recent 32 Thoughts. So, if the Flames want Cozens, they’re gonna have competition.
7. Alright, some other stuff: Buffalo is getting calls on Dylan Cozens. This would terrify me if I were the Sabres, vultures circling overhead while player and team struggle. Right-shot centre, 23 years old, two years removed from a 30-goal season. He’s also signed for five more seasons at a $7.1M AAV, helping his value. I would be very, very careful with this because he’s legitimately wanted.
Friedman already reported on Monday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast that multiple teams have approached Buffalo about the 23-year-old.
“Buffalo fans right now, they are all over Dylan Cozens,” Friedman said. “They’re all over him. And I do think teams have asked about Cozens this year.”
Re: Mason McTavish. I would be very interested. He’s scored 99 points in 175 games, 46 points per 82 games. His possession metrics are very strong. And he’s still 21. I honestly can’t see why the Ducks would move McTavish, but I would think the price would be quite high.

It’s 3 years too early to be trading for these types of guys
They aren’t sure fire needle movers , and the rebuild is just starting
Be patient for once Flames . In 2/3 years you can trade for the next Cozens or McTavish if needed

I still think the best way to re-build is through the draft.
Sure, if an actual great trade for a young centre like McTavish or Cozens comes along, you do it. And I would consider either of those guys for a late 1st, a great trade. But for example, I don’t think the Flames should trade their own 1st this year, as I still think a bottom-10 finish is on the table.
And then I think the Flames should be looking to trade all pending, healthy UFAs for whatever they can get, not that I think any of their pending, healthy UFAs have a lot of value. Vladar’s career save percentage is well under 90, and this year is no different. Kuzmenko has sucked. Barrie was a PTO. Duehr is fringe but effective in his games so far.
I think Conroy should also constantly have his fishing line in the water with Andersson. I’m hoping for an absolute haul.
I would also be surprised if the Flames could trade Kadri or Coleman. They’re old, signed to longer, lucrative contracts, and not producing a lot of points based on the current league scoring rates.
