Also, other GMs know this too. His value may be next to nothing just because of that.
I don't think is value is next to nothing but he is a good toss in piece as part of a larger trade. I think a GM would give up a 2nd for him

Like Wastedyouth, I'm not sold on McTavish. If we're going after a guy in that draft I'm looking at Kent Johnson instead. He's still raw, skates amazing and a dynamic player. Seems like he's starting to pop so might not even be available anymore though.

And I don't think it's an ask to tone it down. I think the coaches know that he is effective when aggressive - but that doesn't mean a blank check to take badly timed and dumb stick penalties.

I will add there were lots of posters who did not like how Bennett played on that edge, often taking dumb penalties in the offensive zone.

That's been McTavish's knock for a long time now too, so get used to it

I think thats the problem. Getting a player that has already started to take off, such as Johnson, Lafreniere, etc, the cost is going to be astronomical. Vs taking a chance on a Mctavish, injured Eichel, Kakko, where you might be able to get for a good discount

The going rate for a high drafted young centre who is struggling to find his place on a team is a 2nd round pick and rights to a 2nd round Swedish winger. So Stromgren and a second gets it done.

Funny part is I was just reading the Anaheim Ducks forum and if you just changed McTavish name to Bennett in those threads you would think it was just this forum talking about Bennett back in 2019.

You'd have to wait about 3 seasons though - Bennett was 24 and in his Draft+7 season when the Flames traded him.

McTavish is 21 and only in his Draft+4 season.

The bolded is accurate. He is entirely too smart and talented to not become at worst a top pairing D man. I don't think you grasp how amazing what he has accomplished in his junior career is. He is as can't miss imo as a Bedard or a Celebrini.

Yet NHL GM's felt otherwise, or he would have been drafted higher.

I think he's a great prospect, but his floor is not a top paring dman.

But I would be hesitant to say that about any dman drafted.

I wasn't Bennett's biggest fan during the end of his tenure in Calgary, especially after he made his trade request. Aside from just taking dumb offensive zone penalties, I thought he played selfishly in general by not using his team mates even if it was going to kill the play. The standard example of a player trying to do everything on his own.

I thoroughly grasp his talent level, and the career he is having in junior. I don't think you grasp the meaning of the word 'floor'.

His floor, is Gostisbehere. His ceiling is Hughes. His more likely projection is a 3-4 guy who can quarterback the PP.

Completely reasonable to hope he becomes a top pairing player - that is well within his potential. But it is NOT his floor.

To say any players floor is a top pairing d-man when they were drafted is a bit ridiculous to be honest.

Even some of the most recent top d-men picks (Dahlin, Power, Hughes, Nemec, ) etc weren't guaranteed to be top pairing d-men and in some cases haven't even reached that potential.

His potential for sure fits into that range, but so much can happen to say his floor is a top pairing d-man with absolute certainty.

Correct.

If you read his draft profile, many felt he has glaring defensive weaknesses which have not yet been exposed at the junior levels.

Now, he has plenty of time to iron those out, but there is never any guarantee he will do so at an all star level.

His ceiling is beyond Hughes. That is what the scouts said before the draft.
