Trade Rasmus Andersson to St. Louis for Colton Parayko, Dalibor Dvorsky, conditional 1st round pick 2025, and conditional 4th round pick 2026
Conditions: if St. Louis Blues miss the 2024-25 NHL playoffs they will keep the 2025 1st round pick but will give up their 2026 1st round pick instead; if St. Louis Blues makes the 2024-25 NHL playoffs, the 2026 4th round pick will turn to 2026 3rd round pick instead.
Rationale: St. Louis Blues gets a younger upgrade in defence with Rasmus as well as salary cap relief (short-term). Calgary compensates for the longer more expensive contract of Colton Parayko by getting St. Louis's best forward prospect in Dvorsky as well as another 1st round pick.
Defence pairs after trade:
Weegar/Miromanov
Bahl/Parayko
Bean/Pachal

Is Dvorsky sufficiently yoked?

So offensively he's a second line player, out side of that he brings nothing else to the table. When this guy isn't scoring, he's utterly useless.
This article on Kuzmenko was written exactly one year ago. Does any of it still sound familiar?
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...nd-weaknesses/
Quote:
Head coach Rick Tocchet has spoken about how he thinks Kuzmenko needs to "play a little harder," especially on the forecheck
who has historically been a streaky scorer. He’s never played a power game. He’s also never killed penalties or identified as a forward who is fully committed, on and off the puck, defensively.
He has at times been a power-play specialist. He does his best work from between the face-off dots and below the hash marks in the offensive zone. And his stats this season aren’t horrible. They have fallen off from last year, sure, but based on his history, that was bound to happen.
He has the potential to bounce back and play more to his identity, but he lacks confidence right now. There's been nothing crisp with his handling of the puck. He’s having pucks slide off his blade in high-danger scoring areas and he’s trying to make an extra play instead or ripping the puck on net.
|
Might as well copy and paste that for 2024 with Flames instead of Canucks.
The guy is regressing. If he can't score, he's useless.

I'm not convinced they see it as a tear down rebuild. Likely a 1-3 year retool thing for them. It could be more of a moneyball scenario than a rebuild too.

Conroy also doesn't see it as a tear down rebuild.
Why does anyone think he does when he's never said that and in fact has been very clear, they aren't tearing down.

His MO is clear. Trading expiring vets, getting younger players like Bahl, Sharangovich and Pachal plus prospects and picks and working the Flames draftees into the lineup.
he really only has Andersson and Backlunds as expiring vets now (and they're two seasons away). Coleman one year farther out. None of them need to be traded in a rush. I'm sure he entertains offers and I'm sure they will be traded closer to the deadline (well, maybe Backlund just retires or plays season to season).

What actions suggest a rip it to the studs rebuild? Any trades have been due to either the player wanting out or looking for more than what would be considered fair market, even for Calgary.
He has been true to his word even in his actions.

He’s got 18pts in 22 games in his first year as a pro in the AHL.
19 y/o 6’1 205 - LHS center - I’d say he’s as bluechip prospect as you’d want honestly.
Only knock you could be super picky on is handiness, we really need RHS but honestly his progression since coming to NA is on par with what you want to see.
88 pts (45g43a) in the OHL last year as an 18 year old in his only junior season in North America.

The Flames are second last in cap spending. The only thing separating them from being in the bottom of the league is Wolf. Wolf was totally untested at the NHL level. He just happens to be, so far, awesome. Without Wolf, the Flames probably lose 4 more games easy, which puts them bottom 5.
My main point was that Conroy was downplaying the extent of his rebuild, and that's largely to appease the owners, who don't want a total tear down. In reality, he's sold off the team for futures.

I can't see st Louis giving up a 2026 first round pick, with no protection, the team is a bubble playoff team at best
If you add protection, Calgary is not going to go for, it's too far out

There isn’t much left to trade on the roster outside of Andersson

The team has the 2nd lowest salary in the league.
He literally cannot rip it down any further than he already has if he wants his team to be allowed to go on the ice.
The only way he could push it further is if he were to like retain 50% on Kadri for a pick, and take back a brutally bad contract in return - but I think that’s beyond ripping it down to the studs

Trading Markstrom.
And we're at the studs now.

And it was time to see what they had in Wolf (plus they had Vladar). Yes, they were trading their #1, but it wasn't like they had nothing in bullpen.

Based on what?
Most reports had the Flames going to Markstrom first about a trade and him being upset at the way it was handled. So Markstrom might have wanted out, only after Conroy was looking at moving him.
