Now his Government is going to have to round up, detain and deport millions of people?
There may actually have to be Soldiers in the Streets. And ironically he's going to be the one who put them there.
Well that wasn’t Trudeau. That was either Paul Martin or Chretien (I’m not sure, because it was basically 20 years ago!).
I want to hear more about the foreign interference in the CPC leadership race though. Surely the media isn’t going to drop that just as we see Michelle Rempel spring away from the question and PP refusing to get security clearance? There’s something very interesting there.

I think he is referencing Pierre calling in the army and tanks to deal with the FLQ in Quebec.

Oh I see...I thought it was the ads they ran in like 2005 or whatever about soldiers in the streets. I'm not old enough to think of Pierre when someone mentions a Trudeau!
I'm also amused that I totally teed one up for Cons here, and they've totally ignored it. Guess they really stick to their talking points!
What are you talking about?
You made one post recently about a dorky populist, and one about Air Canada being greedy (following WestJet who already implemented the same measure). Neither points are contentious.
What do you want folks to discuss or what you specifically want "Cons" to speak on?

Maybe? I definitely don't recall those ads but I was also enjoying my university days at that time so politics wasn't even on the radar. Regardless, it would be amusing if both Trudeau's were responsible for unleashing the military within our borders to round up people.

I would think that Cons would latch on to an opportunity to bash the minister for being anti-business. Like it's kind of ridiculous in a way to summon corporate execs to a meeting because they're trying to make more money? Like that's exactly what they're supposed to do. The minister is grandstanding and picking on an easy target here.
I'm pro wealth re-distribution but meeting with CEOs in one specific industry, instead of, say raising the corporate tax rate or the top tier income tax, isn't the way to do it. There's a legitimate case for regulating oligopolies but then let's go after the banks, telecoms, media companies etc. too.

Are we ever going to have proactive governing? I'm so tired of our governments being completely reactive with no discernable plan in place. Don't worry everyone we're dealing with the Airlines! Grocers! Housing Regulators! Immigration! Military Spending! Inflation!
Whatever the flavour of the month is, that's what we get. No foresight, no vision, no real solutions. The government is absolute garbage. All of it, not just the liberals. The opposition is the same, everyone just shifting with the wind to get some soundbites in to last long enough to get their pension.

I think the issue you have is with Democracy. It is built on the flavor of the month based on the attitudes of the majority of people. If you want 5 year proactive planning, then you need a dictatorship. The hallmark of Democracies is that they are inherently behooving to the whims of the people, not to what is necessarily in their best interest. Staple on some capitalistic oligarchy and you get modern day western governments.

Yeah, it's funny that no one seems to actually talk about this. The 4.9M number is meaningless unless put in context.
I haven't seen a specific number published anywhere for a normal year. But we do know that there are only about 3M non-permanent residents in Canada (inclusive of all work and study permit holders as well as asylum claimants) total. So that 4.9M figure obviously includes millions of people who aren't even residents (i.e. people issued tourist visas at some point in the year).
And of course, it's merely the number of permits set to expire before the end of 2025. So of the number that isn't tourists, that would also presumably include a significant number of people who will renew their visas or transition from a study permit to a postgraduate work permit, and thus not leave the country at all.
But yeah, it'd be nice if people talking about this issue as an unprecedented situation for which no infrastructure exists could actually provide a baseline to compare this to. Surely they must know the normal rate of visa expirations to have such a strong opinion, right?
I'd bet a significant portion are Ukrainian, and their visas should just be renewed. It's likely they were only granted a couple years or maybe even just one because no one knew what would happen.
Disband Canada Post entirely, fire all of them and contract their work out to Amazon!
Problem. Solved. I'm totally kidding. Every nation should have a national postal service.
No more pensions, no more Union dues, sorted.
I don’t think the general public understands how much pressure this strike has put on all of the other shipping companies. It’s pretty obvious that the other companies don’t have the capacity to maintain this going forward, even without the added Christmas volume.

I worked at Greyhound for Christmases....my sweet chariot of sympathy swings quite low.
You know what I care about? Seniors getting their pensions and benefits cheques because they still get them by mail because they're too old and their grandkids dont want to teach them 'computers.'
But in seriousness, I havent really looked into what Canada Post's problems are, I assume its the usual...money, but to be honest? Those guys get paid fairly well as it is.

Yup.
Canada Post doesn't just send useless flyers and Uline catalogs. At some point the strike is actually a serious problem.
At the very least they should have mandated some percentage of the workers back to work to keep a percentage of the mail moving.
Pretty stupid what is going on. And guess who has even less sympathy for the unions now? Those corporate bastards! Always pushing workers down! Oh wait, Canada Post is a crown corp. Nevermind then.

Look here sir....don't even start with me and Uline catalogues! I have a fairly hefty and deep-seeded grudge with them!
