Penalties balanced out over the rest of the game and the Flames only got a single goal. Goaltending kept them in it longer than they deserved.

But the league clearly has a ref problem. It's been clear that in all sports ever since gambling promotion has gotten out of hand, the calls seem to be even more inconsistent than ever.
You can call a penalty on almost every shift. Or in NFL on every play. People are betting more money than ever on these sports. What is to stop a ref from having their friends place some large bets on these games?
This is just one more reason I hate that sports betting is being promoted so much. It makes you question everything when calls do not go your way.
|
I am not really buying into the refs make bad calls because of gambling unless there are prop bets on number of penalties which would be pretty easy to track. The issue is the same as it ever was. If refs called every single penalty by the rulebook then the entire game would have someone in the box, so they have to use discretion on what to enforce and that varies wildly ref to ref. The other thing is that hockey is a fast and chaotic game so they are bound to get some things wrong.
My biggest issue is the situation room and goal challenges. That needs to get figured out, shouldn't feel like a coin flip on goalie interference or kicking motion.

####ty call. If the opposing teams bench or home crowd or both don't simultaneously yell "heeeyyyy", it's probably not a call the linesman should make.

Yeah, lets let the opposing team and crowd referee the game.

That's not where I was going. Read it with a smile instead of a frown and it'll come across as intended

"The NHL has an officiating problem and is a 3rd tier sport"
Is a comment from people who don't watch any other sports.
Thinking the refs are bad is a common refrain from every sports fan in every league.
And those fans are often biased and incorrect.
The Flames deserved that penalty. Horrendous change.

Well, Kadri and Huberdeau need to start producing something
Blame the refs all you want but nobody wins with 1 goal

Wasn't there a league that was going to implement a form of this rule this season?

Every sport has reffing issues for sure.
NBA has a very star driven reffing bias.
NFL is just so strong and fast now that things happen every play and it's impossible to call it all.
MLB has had umpire issues for years.
The NHL has the biggest "Reffing Game Managment" issue IMO though where they let what is happening in the game dictate the calls.

It was a pedantic call.
Officials resist the urge to make pedantic calls all the time.

My only contention is they let it go often...Flames players aren't new, they are losing their #### because it never gets called. Do they have the balls to call that on McDrai in OT on a Saturday night in Toronto? I don't think so.

Well, they lost that one but a win in the next game and suddenly it is a 0.500 road trip at 1-1-1. Not all is lost here.
