I get it, we can't tank or anything but we're just going to keep the cycle of being mediocre and just trying to squeak into the playoffs each year going- but I guess we can always hope to lose in the second round!
Giving away high picks for rentals is insane, and should be right out. I know Murray Edwards is preoccupied with making that 3 games worth of playoff revenue, though....

Reminds of Silvio on the Sopranos saying these are instructions from above.
Conroy probably has marching orders after Edwards seen a few wins because of goalie play.
2 games of playoff revenue with a 60M roster is too good for him, never mind stealing money from the citizens to build a free arena.

Isn't this just another example of fans getting worked into a lather because a hockey executive picks his words carefully to the media?
Conroy isn't going to shed top draft assets for a rental.
I doubt he gets a look at any player in the age range required to make a move with any futures.
They either hold their position and let a guy like Vladar walk for nothing, or they slide ... move Vladar, Kuzmenko and maybe Andersson at the deadline.

Moving a low first (in a weak draft) for a young prospect or underdeveloped C should definitely be on the table and is consistent with the direction of the team.
I would 100% move a low first for a Cozens, Wright, etc.

Yep. But the only way they’ll get a player like that is moving out a big asset in exchange: Andersson, Weegar, or 1sts in 2025 or 2026.
Even that might not do the trick. Conroy says the most common response when he’s asking other teams about a young centre is a flat “no.”

Leafs and Avs have internal cap of $13.25 mil AAV (Matthews) and $12.6 mil AAV (Mackinnon) respectively
Will be interesting to see if either team can sign Marner or Rantanen for less than that
LeBrun says Rantanen believes he can get $14 mil on the open market
Tavares has made it clear he wants to stay in Toronto
One possibility is to use deferred salary to bridge the financial gap
Conroy is scouting the OHL right now while Flames are on road trip
Not news that the Flames are looking for a 2nd line center that is age appropriate and play with the Flames for 3 to 5 years at least
Could be aggressive beyond the center search all depending on if the Flames stay in the mix
Could be bigger players than anticipated at the deadline
LeBrun says a lot of teams are looking for centers
Treliving has indicated the Leafs will be looking at center depth
Trotz wants to upgrade at center
Teams looking to upgrade at center - Easier said than done
Kakko name has resurfaced in trade talks
Rangers not giving him away
Ice time is an issue for Kakko and probably would like a fresh start
|
The only thing I’m taking out of this is that is very very hard to get a top 6 center through trade.

To sign a Winger to 14M is crazy, I don't care if the Cap has and will be going up.

Can anyone name a team that’s very likely to be a buyer at the deadline that has a high quality center prospect or young player that could be in the market for Andersson this year?
Colorado might be a fit. They need to improve their goaltending and their defensive game is struggling. The flames could be a one stop shop under the right circumstances. Only problem is Colorado is pretty loaded on the right side for defencemen (Makar and Manson).
What about this:
To Colorado:
Andersson (50% retained)
Vladar
To Calgary:
Calum Ritchie
2026 1st round pick (lottery protected)
Logan O’Connor
Who is getting the better deal here? The avalanche get the best player in the deal at a fantastic cap hit for 2 years. The flames get worse right now but get a great centre prospect and a 25 year old middle six right winger with good speed. The first round pick is in 2026 so the avalanche aren’t really gambling that their pick this year will be low because of their struggles to start the season. Flames take the pick in 2026 because it’s considered a deeper draft.
What are other options for teams that could be desperate buyers this year that have the type of center prospect/young player that the flames will want?

I think you're wrong. Conroy's marching orders have not changed at all, build Calgary a competitive hockey team. How Conroy goes about that is up to him.

Another good option could be Winnipeg. They are the best team they have ever been… it could be their best opportunity to put in all their chips for this year and next year.
To Winnipeg:
Andersson (50% retained)
To Calgary:
Brayden Yager
2026 1st round pick
2025 2nd round pick
Flames get their top center prospect. I’d be fine with Brad Lambert in place of the 1st and 2nd round pick as well. Would really stock the center cupboard with two good prospects… but I doubt Winnipeg would trade both of their top two prospects. Winnipeg gets the best defenseman likely to be available in trade or free agency for the next 1.5 seasons.

Maybe Andersson is attracted to the potential for Winnipeg winning a cup so he waives his NTC to go there.

I can’t imagine the Flames getting this type of package for Andersson. The Flames gave up less, arguably much less, for a 23 year old Dougie Hamilton who had considerably more team control.

You said Rantanens.
He's a consistent 100+ point forward.
You don't need to put up 100+ points to be considered a top line forward

Detroit loves Swedes and has a ton of good prospects drafted in last 3 years not on the NHL team
Andersen would add a ton to them.

I would be absolutely willing for the flames to add to an Andersson trade if Detroit would be willing to include Danielson.
To Detroit:
Andersson
2025 1st round pick (highest of New Jersey’s or Calgary’s/Florida’s picks)
2025 2nd round pick
Jacob Pelletier
To Calgary:
Nate Danielson
Jeff Petry (cap dump)

Way too much. Danielson isn't that good.

Really depends how you value Yager. Hronek and Chychrun returned top 15 picks and a second. The extra first might be too much but it’s not crazy to have Yager as the base.
