Just watch the clip. He says they would be buyers at the deadline if they are in a playoff spot.
On the surface it’s concerning given the history of adding at the wrong time but given the insiders on the board saying they won’t mortgage for a quick fix it gives me hope. So the definition of adding Conroy is referencing is likely a vet or two for a 4th rounder vs a 1st or 2nd we’ve seen others deal way at a bad time. Technically still buying but the cost isn’t high. No biggie, though I still wish they’d tank.
What is he supposed to say? If they are second in the division at the trade deadline then show me a GM who says that they aren't interested in adding to their team. They don't exist. I prefer to judge Conroy on his actual actions, which to date have been pretty good. He seems to have a good handle on both amateur and professional scouting and seems pretty good at digging up under-utilized players that can thrive in Calgary.

Conroy isn't the issue its the people above him.

That's fair. All we can do is see what happens. The moves so far have been very good on asset management, so I'll remain encouraged until he gives me reason to think otherwise.
This is the exact method the Flames have been using for years. Just say no to locking anyone up long term who is approaching their 30s or in their 30s. Maybe you can do that once you're a player away from something, but this is not the path to take for a team that desperately needs this rebuild to work out well.
I mean i could argue that we're a rantenan away, especially if wolf, coronato and zary keep taking strides.
The biggest hole in this roster is elite forward talent.
He just turned 28. Same thing if we re-sign rasmus. It's not like he's 33.
Even if we sign him and after we re-sign our RFAs, we could be 5-10 million under the cap, with a built up prospect system
Where does he go in a 2015 redraft, which is one of the deepest in modern history? 2nd behind McD? 3rd?
The whole idea of a bur it down rebuild is to get a player exactly like rantenan. Hes arguably a top 10 player in the NHL.

I know I sound like a broken record, and I know I'm supposed to cheer for the team to win, but the plan should've been to sell off a few more assets, get as many high picks as we can, and to finish low in the standings this year and next. We need some blue chip centers!!!
I get it, we can't tank or anything but we're just going to keep the cycle of being mediocre and just trying to squeak into the playoffs each year going- but I guess we can always hope to lose in the second round!
Giving away high picks for rentals is insane, and should be right out. I know Murray Edwards is preoccupied with making that 3 games worth of playoff revenue, though....

I dont disagree, but the orgs just not going to do that.
I bet conroy was low key hopping that they would bottom out this year but they aren't.
If wolf is what he's shown so far and we're not going to sell off vets, this team won't bottom out.
I'd rather be middling with Rantenan then middling without. Atleast he gives you a franchise forward.

Yeah, Conroy might just be talking up a team that is playing above expectations but in his interview he definitely implies he'd be open to adding outside of age appropriate players if they are in the hunt.

That was the plan - they sold off all the expiring contracts and this year and next were supposed to be the years we bottomed out. 'Unfortunately', we've been getting excellent to elite level goaltending, the team has been playing with structure, and some of the young players have really stepped up. That means we're unlikely to bottom out.
I was/am still on team rebuild; however, that's clearly not going to be possible with the players we currently have unless Wolf hits a slump or the team stops buying into what Huska is selling.
Fortunately, we've already stockpiled a lot of draft capital and partially restocked the prospect pool (particularly when it comes to defense), while accumulating a ton of cap space. I'm alright with Conroy spending some of those assets to acquire a youngish forward, especially if he can find an under-utilized/appreciated forward similar to what he found in Bahl, who can step into the lineup and is likely to remain with the team for several seasons. That's consistent with a retool and still leaves lots of room for the team to grow through the draft.
If Conroy spends some of that capital to find a late 20s forward on an expiring deal or signs older players to a retirement deal in the offseason then I'll be upset. For now, I'm just going to enjoy a hardworking team, filled with exciting young players, and trust Conroy not to pull a Treliving and mortgage the future to accelerate the retool

You cannot cheer for them to lose, even if its in their best interests.
You cheer for them to win, and accept loses more graciously then previously.
Wolf was always the wild card in this Flames season. If he was like he was last year (let's say an average goalie), Calgary's record would be much worse. But he's not and its not. And going forward, it's a good thing regarding Wolf.
But you are correct, it's preventing Calgary from getting the elite talent it requires for an eventual contender.
If Wolf could only have taken a year to excel....

I could still see Conroy adding at the deadline by trading 1st/2nd round picks if the flames are still in a playoff spot. But not for rentals or older players. It could still be a move for 20-25 year olds under contract past this season. There are others on this board that know this upcoming draft far better than I do but it seems like the overall assessment of this draft is that there is not a ton of high end talent outside the top 10 (or even top 6) picks. So there might be more value in trading those picks for players taken in other recent drafts that are either NHLers or are close to becoming NHLers.
