Nichuskin seems to be a real key cog for the Avalanche. When he can play he seems to tip the balance for them that let's them be a powerhouse where they have a top line that produces, but also gets enough from the rest of the lineup so it's not such a top heavy team. Drouin will help with that too.
Landeskog will be a wild card. He'll be 32 and have missed the equivalent of 3 full seasons when he returns. Even as a third line type he could boost their overall depth. But that's a lot of time to miss and that's getting to be pretty old in this league. But maybe he's primed for a Teemu Selanne like late career surge if he's fully healthy.
Good time to bet Avs futures off their slow start and Wiinipeg being so good to start the season.

With the Flames not really looking to make a deep run this year barring some cinderella story, I hope 7 Western Conference teams all load up at the deadline and/or maximize whatever LTIR gains they can. Screw the Oilers. If they even make the playoffs.

Landeskog is one of my favourite non-Flames players. It really sucks how derailed his career has been because of injuries. It seems unlikely after missing so much time that he can pick up where he left off, but I'm rooting for him.

Nah. He's not going to be very useful for the Avs stepping right into the playoffs after not playing a regular NHL game for several years. They would need to get him into the lineup by March at the latest.

Yeah, I would think he would need at least a month of games, if not 2, in order to be at all effective in the playoffs. And even that would be minimal effectiveness.

The same thing was said after Kucherov missed a whole season and then came back. High level players get up to speed pretty fast, especially if they take an extended period of time in practices. They might not be totally up to game speed but they also have the advantage of being totally rested while everyone else has the wear and tear of an 82 game season.

True. But Kucherov was 28, missed one year, and his value comes from his hands.
Landeskog is 31, has missed 2 years, and his legs are more important to his value than Kucherov's.
Also, Kucherov was the exception, on this issue.

Kucherov is a weird case too though.
He missed 56 games in the COVID shortened season following a compressed schedule after the bubble where they won the cup and he had been playing games in September of 2020 before returning in April/May 2021.
Kucherov's case was more like a guy had a full training camp, got injured in camp, and returned for day 1 of the playoffs.
Landeskog's last game was June 26 2022. Let's say he returns for day 1 of the playoffs this year (~April 21) he would have not played any type of game for 1,030 days.
That is pretty much unprecedented for any athlete that I can remember in my lifetime

Closest would be Mario missing 3 seasons and then coming back, but 66 is on a different planet than most players.

Totally different. His final year before retiring he had a PPG of 1.60. His first year in coming back, he had a 1.76
|
