I would make an exception for Byram.

I think if you play him like a top dman he will flourish.

Anytime they have had him on the top pair with Dahlin, like he was tonight and scored 2, he has done very well. Having him along with Dahlin and Power makes it hard to give them all the icetime they need to showcase their skills.

Speaking of Buffalo, boy is it ever sad to see what's happened to Jack Quinn, after dealing with injuries, and now struggling to produce (only 2 points in 12 games). He was once considered to be one of the league's top prospects, and seemed to be on his way up a few years ago. It would hurt to lose an asset like that in a rebuild, but I guess he's still only 23....

Boy is Cozens ever struggling. Like really, really struggling. I don't know what's going on with him. I wouldn't be opposed to trading for him but I don't know if he's worth as much as the Sabres would probably want in return. Are you getting the guy from a few years ago or the player of the past few seasons trending down?

That's the tough part.

In his last 92 games he has 19 goals and 51 points - and at a 45 point pace he's not worth the $7.1M contract he's on.

So you really probably don't want to pay a premium for that, but the Sabres also aren't going to want to sell low.

To get out of that contract they may want to think about it. Is he really part of the solution? I dunno. I also don’t think the Flames should be trying to acquire a boat anchor contract for the sake of it.

Why not? Calgary loves boat anchor contracts.

Fits the criteria that Craig has set perfectly.
Please Conroy stay away. He’s an average 2nd center in his prime.

He's 23 with upside, not 30 heading into the downside of his career. Players seem to flourish once they leave Buffalo.

I agree but like I said earlier, the Flames would really have to do their homework on that one given his contract and the probable price to acquire. They need to be really sure that they can help to fix whatever ails him.

tough call, Pospisil adds the grit that the Flames need...these types of players are not easy to find.

What’s ails him is he has already had his career year.

Hes only 23.
He's also a big guy.

The floor with him is a 20g/50p guy but given his age there is tons of upside.
2nd line center floor with some 1st line center upside.
Plus as others have mentioned how many guys seem to flourish after theyrw traded out if Buffalo.

I'd still pay a premium for that.

I'm not even sure what that would look like though.
It would have to be something that helps them win now.

I just can't see them giving up on him though. It would be extremly dumb of them.

I think Cozens is a good gamble to bounce-back. Still young, big, lots of tools. 7.1 million through 29-30.

The issue I have is that Calgary has Huberdeau (10.5) through 30-31 and Kadri (7) through 28-29.

In many ways, I would feel more comfortable with Cozens simply because he is young and Buffalo is a gong-show. There is a good chance that he out-performs his deal sooner rather than later, and a change of scenery might be exactly what this kid needs.

It is a bigger risk for Calgary since with the aforementioned long-term deals already on the books, and with the likely decline of play as Huberdeau and Kadri age in those deals, the risk becomes significantly larger IF Cozens doesn't bounce back. 24.6 million in negative contracts would force Calgary to stay mediocre and stretch-out the rebuild longer than it needs to go.

If the Flames are confident that they would be able to get Cozens going again, I would be fully on-board and thrilled to grab him. Big centres don't grow on trees. They just better make sure that this kid is closer to Ryan Getzlaf than Ryan Johansen.

Cozens has 1 good season. He also has a large contract. If he was on a short-term deal, you might take the risk but not with that contract.

I get flames being interested in cozens but I can’t see buffalo interested in trading him. They pretty much made their decision on 2nd line center when they traded mittelstadt at deadline last year. Can’t see them giving up on cozens 15 games in.

Mittelstadt was somone I was hoping flames could get last year because of his contract status. Alas not to be.

I hear you, but I feel like Adams is ripe for a hail mary we need to make the playoffs NOW type trade to try and save his job.
