What were you expecting from a bad team?
A lot of people wanted a rebuild and high draft picks. We are 9 games into the first season of a few bad ones and people are already upset. I don't think some fans are ready for what they asked for.

I am ready for all the losses.

At least we are 1-0 against Mulletville this year.

Kadri has scored some big goals, but he has played really poorly at times as well. They are giving him some tough minutes but he has been on the ice for a ton of goals against.
Remains to be seen if the pump and dump strategy for Mantha is going to pay off. There are a few guys playing great for the Wranglers.

Andersson and Weegar aren't the problem. Playing older "vets" like Hanley and Miromanov instead of the younger players is the real issue.
The Flames should be following the Anaheim approach, where the young guys are paired up with solid vets like Andersson and Weegar instead of being expected to carry their own pairing from day 1 (aka the Buffalo approach)
|
I would not put Miromanov in the older vet category myself. Everything I have seen from him seems to indicate that he has the serious potential to be an every day NHL dman. If he is, at 27 he probably has 5-6 good years left minimum.

We desperately need to unload some vets this year.

If those three continue to develop into good players, it’s a win for now

Exactly!
We will probably stink for quite a while, and theres a really good chance that a lot of the "prospects" we are talking about today wont be around when we are relevant again.
All we have to do is keep buying tickets.

Nobody should be upset
Team should head toward top 10 if not top 5 pick
Anything less is a huge disappointment

After 2 season, I think, Sharangovich is the best fit to play with Huberdeau.
I would try Huber-Sharky-Pospisil line for 10 games.

Feel like getting robbed in the Jets game deflated the group a bit. They came out strong but missed some good chances early.

Zary - Kadri - Kuzmenko
Pelletier/Coronato - Backlund - Coleman
Huberdeau - Pospisil - Sharangovich
Lomberg - Rooney/Kirkland - Mantha
Let's run with that for a bit.

Zary should get a shot at centering the top line of Sharangovich and Kuzmenko.
Move Kadri to center Hoobastank and Mantha.
Pops hasn't done a whole lot to warrant an extended look where he is currently. Slap Coronato on Backlinds line. Make cuts accordingly.

I thought the flow was pretty even in the first half of the game, and the shot clock didn’t reflect either possession or scoring opportunities. Could have easily been a Flames lead after one.
The second half of the game… not so much.
It’s a rebuild. This is what we signed up for.

Count me in as someone who thinks it's time for Rooney and Hanley to take a seat. I appreciate they were good soldiers and they got a good chance to play now but I'd rather see the youth more frequently.
There will be games like this as they all won't be peachy. Just sit back, enjoy the good games and pray to the hockey gods that we can draft a top centre.

Might be interesting if they try this for a couple games:
Kuzmenko - Kadri - Mantha (or Coronato)
Huberdeau - Zary - Sharangovich
Pospisil - Backlund - Coleman
Lomberg - Kirkland - Klapka
Bahl - Andersson
Weegar - Bean
Barrie - Pachal
Wolf (defacto starter)

This season is the best.
If we win I'm happy for the guys. They're obviously out working and playing a solid team game to get the win, OR one of our goalies is stealing the game. Our young guys will get some NHL experience as the season goes on.
If we lose we are getting higher powered ammo for our scouts to work with and I totally believe in our scouting staff.
I honestly cannot remember a less stressful season.
This is not our time but it will be soon enough.

Yup, I have very low expectations and will cheer for the wins when they happen but I still think they will be solidly in the bottom 5 by the end of the season. The only really bad outcome will be if they finish with the 11th pick lol

We just need to start playing the youth though, there’s just no need for extended looks at Hanley and Rooney though Huska seemingly loves both more than he should. Start giving your future players more development time and learning the positions you want them to be in the next few years.
But yea, this is the hockey we signed up for…. For the most part. Honestly I’m okay with it, but I’d rather see the kids than the guys who are in now not giving a ####. I do know that Craig isn’t blind to this either, Flames are still very much looking for that 20-25 year old center to build into the future.
|
Yeah but that's the tension. If Craig is going to guarantee Huska that he'll have the job in 2-3 years then yeah. But otherwise, Huska will do what he thinks he needs to do to try to win games and keep his job.
I'm fine with how things are progressing under Huska, and would certainly prefer some more youth. But I understand why he's doing what he's doing.
As for people asking for Zary to play center... the kid is clearly going through a growth phase and his game is taking large steps. Protecting the puck, stripping defenders, playing passes to himself off the back of the net. He's starting to realize what he can do and was the most noticeable player on both teams imo. Just let him keep going and don't pointlessly rock the boat at this time by moving him to another position.

A lot of hate being directed towards Huberdeau and Mantha, but I think Kadri and Kuzmenko have been absolute turds at both ends of the rink for 90% of the year and have pretty much escaped criticism. Sharangovich is also clearly a step or two behind which is to be expected.
At the very least we are seeing Zary blossom into a player who really looks like a capable 1st line forward. His ability and confidence in holding onto and protecting the puck is world class for a guy his size. I think his offense is being neutered to some degree by being stapled to Backlund and Coleman.

I'm looking forward to Mantha and Kuzemenko being traded. Give them lots of powerplay time and offensive starts, but Pelletier and Coronato should be getting NHL reps before the season ends.
