Nope, that was not where I was going at all, and frankly, I don't care what position you took - I was a big Bennett fan too, and was thrilled we got him at 4. None of that matters now.

My post was in reference to you - joining in 2024 and all - referencing threads from 10 years ago.

The genius that ran the team thought Ryan was better than Bennett and he was better off on the wing with other scrubs

That was the problem

I am not "pretending" anything, but I hope people also realize that I am wrong A LOT— totally happy to own that. My memory is also flawed, so if you find things that I wrote nearly ten years ago that contradict what I said yesterday ... um ... "WHOOPIE"?

Who the hell cares?

That was the problem
Bennett had four NHL coaches in his time in Calgary. Which one was the "genius"?

But, also, Ryan was a much better centre than Bennett was when the Flames acquired him. Maybe there was some poor patience with Bennett's development that contributed to his shortcomings, but at the stage where the Flames were when Ryan was signed, Bennett was not really an option to do the job they wanted Ryan to do.

Yes. Bennett was mishandled. And, also yes, he was not a very good player in Calgary, and was probably not ever going to be more than a middle-six or second-line centre.

Is BigThief really trying to do a gotcha on Text for changing his opinion over the course of 10 years?

Guys, he was probably saving those in a folder somewhere with them ready to toss as soon as someone said something contradictory, to increase his internet points.

Give it to him, it's all he's got.

No, it's just funny seeing him pretend he had Bennett pegged exactly as the player here now. We were all on the Bennett train, myself included. No one is saying you can't change your opinion but again, that isn't happening here. It took about a minute of searching, the website has a search history. Next time I'll just say something without backing it up. Considering the bizarre defensive takes that might seem more appropriate.

Interesting to read Conroy state he would be willing to trade a 1st round pick in the most recent Francis piece on SN

Unless you have some injuries and needed to do something, sending a first-round pick for a guy who would be here for a year doesn’t make much sense,” said the GM, mindful of the rebuild afoot.

“But if it was a first-round pick for a guy who would be here long term, we would be open to that.”

The article mentions the target would be 23-25 with pro experience. Kirby Dach style move that the Habs made. The Devils or Knights picks would likely be the ones in play

Some people just don’t appreciate a well-pulled quote post and I’ll always appreciate how confused and sometimes even scared people get by the search function.

Like Enoch and only Enoch would say, they seem to think the search function “is witches.”

It is why it is a non story. It’s the exact same as he was saying in the summer

(I note in passing that Textcritic said nothing in that quote that he has contradicted in this thread. He did not say there was any particular element in Bennett's game that was elite; only that his scoring in his draft year was comparable to MacKinnon's.)

The quote from Textcritic that you are laughing at? That was from July, 2014 – BEFORE Bennett played a single NHL game. By the time he was established as an NHL regular (2015-16) MacKinnon had shown himself to be a clearly superior offensive player. That was before MacKinnon's breakout year, 2017-18, when his production almost doubled from 53 points to 97. Meanwhile, Bennett had regressed. He wouldn't top his rookie production until after his trade to Florida, and he still has never scored 50 points in a season.

At the time they were drafted, Bennett and MacKinnon were roughly comparable players. Bennett was a lot closer to his ceiling, MacKinnon had immense growth still to go. There's a reason why Bennett was the last to be chosen of the big four prospects in the first tier of the 2014 draft.
I was going to post this - but you did a better job.

Looking back at the last rebuild, I have no issue with the Hamilton acquisition trade. I do have an issue with the Hamonic acquisition trade.

I'd still take the same stance now I think. Hamilton was like 22 when acquired at the '15 draft?

Hamonic was 26-27 when acquired at the '17 draft?

Those 4-5 years are a big deal IMO
