I'm the furthest thing from those "look at TEH WOKE liberals trying to cancel everything" dummies on the far right. But as someone who loved Norm Macdonald and just joking around in general, I don't see humour as the great threat to decency and understanding that many do now a days.
I separate it out as art, the same as music or film. In that respect I love absurd, offensive jokes and see them as just jokes and not actual commentary that needs to be squashed out.

At various points leading up to the draft Bennett was projected to go #1, it isn't hard to find draft profiles saying he had top line potential.

Quote:
Top-End Potential
At his top potential, Bennett is an All-Star, first-line center who can top out at 90-95 points. He could become a team captain down the road and a regular at the NHL Awards and All-Star Game.
Bennett can score 30-35 goals a year with his hockey smarts and his habit of keeping his stick on the ice. His vision and playmaking skills mean he is capable of 50-60 assists as well. He should be one of those players who makes his linemates better.

It has probably been mentioned already, but I just checked Sam Bennett's NHLE based on his last Juniour season, and discovered that it is identical to Nathan MacKinnon's. Bennett was only 2 mos. older than MacKinnon when he was drafted, he is very close in size and weight, and given how well rounded his game is, I think that this is something that is likely significant. Bennett could very realistically become the best player from the 2014 draft.

(I note in passing that Textcritic said nothing in that quote that he has contradicted in this thread. He did not say there was any particular element in Bennett's game that was elite; only that his scoring in his draft year was comparable to MacKinnon's.)
The quote from Textcritic that you are laughing at? That was from July, 2014 – BEFORE Bennett played a single NHL game. By the time he was established as an NHL regular (2015-16) MacKinnon had shown himself to be a clearly superior offensive player. That was before MacKinnon's breakout year, 2017-18, when his production almost doubled from 53 points to 97. Meanwhile, Bennett had regressed. He wouldn't top his rookie production until after his trade to Florida, and he still has never scored 50 points in a season.
At the time they were drafted, Bennett and MacKinnon were roughly comparable players. Bennett was a lot closer to his ceiling, MacKinnon had immense growth still to go. There's a reason why Bennett was the last to be chosen of the big four prospects in the first tier of the 2014 draft.

That was one quote. Textcritic was on the Bennett hype train just like the rest of us. Trying to revise history to suggest he had Bennett pegged all along is just fantasy.

I agree with everything you said, but in addition, I think that the combination of Monahan/Draisaitl is much less appealing because of the absence of speed down the middle. Monahan is a decent skater but I'm not sure that Draisaitl will ever even get to his level. Bennett's much better skating and speed creates a whole new element for this team.

Almost two years post draft, reffering to Bennett as a "high-end scoring centre"
https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...36#post5858236

I can see the temptation in ranking Tkachuk ahead of both Monahan and Bennett, but I would tend to fall in line with those who think that high-end scoring centres are dramatically more valuable than wingers over all. At any rate, I think all three players are very close in terms of how they rank in their draft years.

Text is one of the biggest homers on the board, his posts would make dino7c blush. Finding him cooming over a Flames prospect isn't difficult. Pretending the Sam Bennett we see now is the Sam Bennett he always saw is insane.

To be fair, as a huge Draft follower I can honestly say that Bennett was very highly valued in his draft year, and first on many lists. I didn't think he would be available when we picked, but I was super delighted when we got him as he first on my list as well. That draft was a four-horse race, and it could have went a number of ways.

Yeah, I agree which is why I'm being totally fair.
Textcritic was on the Bennett Bandwagon like the majority of us were. Suggesting this in 2024...

Enoch Root,I was 100% on the Bennett bandwagon, probably one of his biggest cheerleaders. I'm not also not pretending I wasn't.
If you think that's what's happening you missed the point.

I didn't mean to turn the whole thread into a Bennett discussion. The team didn't develop him properly, but also Bennett failed to take a step when given the opportunity. His O-zone penalties were killer.
I just thought that finding someone who used to be an elite center in the league as a part of the development staff wouldn't hurt. Would such an individual have turned Monahan, Bennett, or Lindholm into an elite center? Probably not. However, he might have helped making them a little better, or he could've helped a guy like Bennett finding his game a year or two sooner. It's all hypothetical anyway.
That was one of the reasons I was pretty happy when Savard became a part of the coaching staff. It obviously didn't work out.
