Ok, so I read the article, and this is a misrepresentation of what was said. The exact quote is:
Quote:
Edmonton is missing intensity and urgency in the opening matchups, likely a mix of Stanley Cup Final disappointment and the same thing that always plagues the team — thinking they are too skilled to play simple hockey.

I'm reading that as him saying that the OILERS think that they are too skilled to play simple hockey...and he's not wrong in that. The Oilers seem to think that they should just be handed the Cup at the start of the season, that any time McWhiny charges down the ice, the goalie should just get out of the way and let them score. That McBaby should get the 'right of way'.
The Oilers epitomize the "just give it to me" mindset. They don't think that they need to even play simple, basic hockey...they should just be handed it. That's a problem that's plagued them for years...and I love seeing it. Because they get smacked down time and time again as "bottom feeder teams like Calgary", who put in the work, beat them 4-1...

I think this is even better. We know Oilers fans are incredibly delusional, but it's great if the players are delusional, too.

I think the players definitely bought into the media hype, hence their lazy pathetic play over these first few games. They think they’re just gonna cruise to victory on skill and McPPs alone. And that attitude has plagued them for years, which is why they never win anything. They just don’t play a strong team game, and they never have. It’s always just trying to out-score their problems and relying way too much on 2 players.

If only the other teams played a skilled game instead of basic hockey.

Yup.
They overplay their stars and their role-players are just content to take a back-seat.
"I dont have to work hard because...Hall/RNH/Yak/Drai/Mcdavid will just take care of it."
They've been doing it forever. But you can only ride horses for so long.

When your remuda consists of a racing thoroughbred, two mules, and three merino sheep with saddles tied to their backs, there is no satisfactory way to divide the work.

100% agreed.
Every coach they hire (and eventually fire) initially tries to implement defensive accountability to fix what’s been missing under his predecessor…until he realizes that the stars don’t plan on listening and he has to play the fun twins for 30 minutes a night in hopes the team wins and saves his job…
Rinse and repeat, since the very first lottery ball.

Starting to think it was McDavid who had the better defensive players sent away to bring in more offensive players. The Oilers having a good penalty kill and goals against goes against everything they are about. They brought in worse defensive players. He lost the scoring race last year which is what is most important.

It's always nice to see Edmonton where they're most comfortable - at the bottom of the standings.

I just can't imagine being part of that rinse and repeat cycle in Edmonton.
1) make a move
2) media hypes it
3) fans believe it
4) doesn't work out
Just doesn't happen in every market.
There were no flashy articles about the hidden gem in Bahl or Bean when they were acquired by the Flames this summer.
Nothing about Miromanov being this huge find that Vegas overlooked.
Just insane that this happens every off season.

I watched that McDavid whine fest from the Stanley Cup finals this morning. Jumping Jesus. I thought I was reading the typically CP over reaction to anything oilers but goddamn that was embarrassing. It is a as bad as everyone here made it out to be. Not sure I would really want that on display if I am the organization. If my buddies did that they would be razzed for life about it.
