I'm personally looking forward to Lavoie bouncing back and forth between Vegas and Edmonton for the next month because Team X keeps putting in a claim for him which prevents him from being sent directly to the minors

Thanks for the explanation everyone, much appreciated. Why wouldn't the team that was going to claim him today not just put in a claim again now that Oilers waived him? Do we know which team it was?

That's too bad.
I would have voted for seagulls at the dump or dead pigeon.

let's say that team was Colorado (that was one rumor or suggestion I heard) if they are still interested they would put in another claim
but in the meantime, possibly another team (like the Flames) who sat out the last 2 rounds on this player now decides maybe they want to put in a claim given that they have lost a few players in the meantime to waivers and injury , they would have priority now over Colorado
so the process has to play out all over again (teams are hypothetical perhaps but a scenario that isn't out of the realm of possible)

There were teams ahead of Edmonton in the standings? But how?

waiver priority is probably based on actual standings (end of last year), not affected by oilers going to cup final, so the oilers would be low 20's or whatever, instead of 31.

Nurse will get the same option to get paid not to play at some point on his contract, like Smith got to "retire" with a year left on his contract and Kane got to get surgery scheduled at the start of the season, instead of at the start of the summer instead of being out and about all summer golfing and whatever dirtbag things he got up to.
That's how they'll get space at some point.

That won't get them any more assets to make trades with.

Looking at the standings, I see the Oilers are in first place overall!* Raise the banner!
*Among teams that have played at least one game but scored zero goals.

Amazingly, I don't even think that is true... Toronto would be ahead of them on goal differential.
Stinkytown can't even be first in your extremely specific category

Only the perennially terrible Sabres can keep the Oilers out of last place.
