Huberdeau waived himself two years ago and has yet to rescind it.

Quick waiver rules:
Claiming team does not have to keep the player on the roster. However if they want to demote him, they have to waive him again.
If the original team re-claims him, they can move him down to the AHL without waivers if they are the only team to make a claim. If not, they have to waive him again.
Players claimed on waivers can be traded, but they have to be offered to any other team that may have made a claim. If those teams decline, he can then be traded.
The cost of picking up someone on waivers depends on years of being on a pro contract. The highest is 90k for a goaltender who has been on a pro contract for 2 years or less, and the lowest is just over 3k for a player with 9 years or more pro experience.
So to sum it up:
If Pelletier is claimed by San Jose, Edmonton, and Vancouver, San Jose gets him due to current waiver priority. If San Jose waives him again, and Calgary and Vancouver make a claim, then Calgary gets him and if they want to move him down, he has to be put on waivers. If Calgary claims in and no one else does, then they can put him in the AHL without putting him on waivers. If San Jose wanted to trade him, they would have to offer him to Edmonton and Vancouver. If they no longer want him, he can be traded. If one or both of them does, waiver priority takes precedence again, so Edmonton would get him.

Flames could not risk losing a stud like Hanley. 5’11 33 year old dman with no offence do not grow on trees.

That comparison was out there when we drafted him. Mainly SN as I recall but I think I remember Tre using it in his talk about the player after the draft too. In any case it was pretty lofty expectation for the kid.

Had no idea they kept Hanley on the roster. One of the first head scratchers from Conroy.
Hanley sucks.

Hanley will still be a top 11 dman in the organization by Christmas. Just makes sense. This generations Grossman.

I think this has a lot more to do with the Flames not wanting Pelletier to sit in the press box. He needs to play games, and right now he's not even the 13th best forward based on the training camp.
If he makes it to the AHL, that's great for the Flames. If a team picks him up on waivers and gives him a chance, then it's great for Pelts.
Hanley is here mostly for popcorn duty. I doubt he sees more than 15 games all season.

I actually love the message this sends to developing picks. You don't just get a spot if you don't show any progression, even if it is a rebuilding team.

We have 8 dmen. They kept up Honzek who needs to play more than Pelts. If Honzek plays 6 minutes and Hanley is in the press box it’s a dumb move.

Always earned, never given. Refreshing to see this motto actually in play. Pelltier didn’t do enough to gain the right to stay. Shouldn’t punish guys like Honzek or Klapka because of waiver eligibility. Often under BT people would complain that young guys never got a chance. This shows that times are different and Conroy is true to his word. Is it risky? Sure, but he didn’t do enough to take a job.
Huska and Conroy were clear from day one. There are jobs up for grabs and unfortunately not everyone will get one. The responsibility was on the player to force their hand. Pelltier didn’t do that.

Is it Pelletier's best chance to become the Canadian as soon as possible. May be he knew Montreal will claim him from waivers, and used it perfectly. May be Conroy and Pelletier's agent agreed about that.

I really don't like it - bit of a broken record/have said it before, but I think Pelletier's performance pretty clearly fell off due to injuries and he should have been given a chance to get healthy again.
And I have no problem with waiving him if he's been passed by other pieces we can build around, but this roster is hot garbage - it's a classic late 90s flames roster chock full of just enough journeymen not to rebuild properly who offer zero value to the flames when they are actually into another window.
This franchise does such a poor job embracing youth and actually rebuilding, super frustrating to always be the dumbasses shooting for 17th place.

Okay, so I'll wait until they play Honzek 6 mins a night before sharpening my pitchfork.
Would you have liked it if Pelletier made the team, but was sitting for the first 10-15 games? Then draw into a game, and sit once more? Similar to Duehr last year.

I’d prefer that over waiving him and keeping Hanley on the roster yes.

I don't necessarily care about waiving pelletier. It just hurts to have valimaki and pelletier miss with what we need right now.

Pelletier has had his chances. Bottom line is he hasn’t delivered, in part due to injury. But let’s be real. He’s 23. He’s being outplayed by 19-year-olds. Letting him sit in the press box because he might have some potential left is the wrong call. He needs game time and he’s not ready for NHL game time.
