*late first round pick
Those are the ones the Flames seem to whiff on perennially. If he was a second rounder he'd be an impact middle sixer already.
Late first round is a graveyard for us.

I mean sure make a call on Hanley over Pelletier (or Schwindt if you prefer), but that shouldn't be the reason. 33 year Hanley can- if the play is really to ensure all of your prospects see the ice in the A- eat popcorn there as much as here, no? (with the added advantage of showing them the ropes a little?)
I suppose some sort of long game is that they think he will have TDL value
|
It's less about Hanley and more about Pelletier. If they kept Pelletier up on the big club, he'd definitely be eating popcorn more often than he would in the A, where he'll be an every day guy in the lineup. Hanley, you're right, will likely eat popcorn most of the time on both teams. So given those options, Flames are taking the risk and hoping Pelletier clears, so he can get into every Wranglers game.

Seems like there have been as good or better players on waivers every day. If they lost him they could score an upgrade

A lot of people thinking, "He's a former first round pick, why would they waive him?" then looking up his stats and understanding.

and that is a defensible decision (I may not agree with it but defensible) I just think its a better reason that we can't waive Hanley because we have too many AHL D

yeah that's interesting- but would you have kept him up? 3 goalie things are always weird
there was still an easy path to it if they choose- sorry Hanley I'm looking in your direction again...

Hanley not being waived makes the Pelletier and Cooley thing even more confusing.
Although with Cooley I get not keeping 3 goalies.
But with forwards you could easily keep 14 and then if Klapka or Honzek don't make an impression you can easily send them down and still have Pelletier here.

It's not like there's a clear cut starter right now.
This is one of those few situations where you'd entertain it. Vladar had half the shot volume of Helle and managed to lose. Still not seeing a guy that's taken a step or looks on the verge of taking one, but we'll see.

I honestly don't see Pelletier clearing waivers. Is it bad asset management? Maybe. At the same time are we really missing a guy like Valimaki right now?
|
"Loosing Valimaki for nothing!!" is actually very interesting to explore right now, as if we hadn't lost the former 1st round, 16th pick overall from the 2017 draft for nothing, we may not have been in the market for signing Bean, the former 1st round, 13th pick overall from the 2016 draft for nothing.
Not sure the team on the ice or the prospect pool of the organization is a lot different with Valimaki here instead of Bean, or that we're any better or worse off with Bean here instead of Valimaki.

In situations like this I always suspect that the team has better intel than I do about things. If they were concerned about losing either Pelletier or Cooley on waivers, then they would waive them at a time when they are most confident that they will clear. Is that day today? Or, is the team in possession of better information than the rest of us that suggests there is not much, if any, interest in these players?
