I suggested Okhotiuk for Kolosov on Flamesnation lol.

Yeah, I don't get it either. A goalie on the smaller side, drafted in the 3rd round, with mediocre stats in the minors, zero NHL games, soon to be 23 years old, and apparently they want at least a 2nd rounder for him.
I doubt many people outside of Philadelphia even heard of him before he started making the news for threatening to hold out.

It's a weird link with the NHL-level goalie questions right now, but they probably have been following the guy for a while as they've dipped into the Russian goalie pool pretty consistently at the draft since 2020, including Sergeev in Kolosov's draft year. They might like him a lot at the right price.
Interestingly, Kolosov was picked right after the Flames took Huckins in 2021. Waalstedt and Cossa went in the first round that year but then no goalie was taken until Kolosov.
The Flames may have figured since there were other goalies available that were ranked a little higher than Kolosov, and goalies hadn't started going yet, that they could wait until their second 3rd round pick to grab him. But then Kolosov was picked next and that kicked off a little bit of a goalie draft run.
This was also the first draft after Sigalet was promoted, so perhaps Sigalet has a particular bee in his bonnet around this goalie, and that they didn't take him in 2021, because Kolosov may have been Sigalet's guy at his first draft as the Director of Goaltending.
Lots of speculation, just like that they share the same agent stuff, but draft history is fascinating and likely has a good amount to do with future prospect trades when they happen.

There is rumour that Ken "small hands" Holland has accepted a position with Utah HC.

So… if they keep everyone:
Bouchard + McDavid + Draisaitl + Nurse + Hyman = $56 million
$56 million in 5 guys. That’s without any other players signed. Yikes.

I have a hard time seeing a team that sent out
Lindholm
Markstrom
Mangiapane
Hanifin
Tanev
Zadorov
And brought in the following guys to replace them
Kuzmenko
Mantha
Wolf
Bahl
Miromanov
Pachal
I have hard time seeing that team make such an improvement on last years result.
|
Lindholm, Zadorov, and Mangiapane were not good for the Flames last season
Hanifin and Tanev are the two names on that list that will not be replaced easily

Add in Nothing-Happens and Skinner, who let's say will come in at around $6 million for argument's sake as he's a decent, serviceable starting goalie whose stats will likely benefit from the team in front of him... that would bring it up to $67 million for 7 players in 26/27. Assuming the cap goes up to around $95 million by then, that would only leave them with $28 million for the other 14-15 players on their roster. Ouch.
They need to offload Nurse in the worst way, but even if they do manage that (good luck moving that contract without a massive add-in, btw), that only marginally improves their cap situation. It's quite amazing, really.

Agree on most of that. I think Bahl can be that tough defensive presence with a stronger defensive game. If Barrie can show some kind of offensive flair and run powerplay 2 I would have no problem seeing a Bahl Barrie pairing. Let's each guy run with with what their strong suits are. If Huberdeau decides to play hockey and a healthy Kuzmenko can pop on the powerplay there will be a nice little pot of gold come trade deadline. I'm really digging the youth train right now also. These young guys aren't totally raw and just need that chance. Bean could be a really nice add also. I really like Andersson but hey, a spade is a spade and give him new scenery. Give Miromanov powerplay 1. Let's see what these have.
Side note: Get a young center for Andersson. Eat salary even for a good one on a contending team. Love Rasmus but this timeline isn't the one.

It amuses me that it seems like we have been talking about Nurse and his albatross contract forever. He is only in year 3 of 8 of that thing. His salary is 12M this year and 10M next year. Maybe in year 5 of that contract when his real salary is 2M less than the cap you might have a chance, but it will still cost you.

And if they offload Nurse, their already thin blueline is that much worse. And they have very little draft and prospect capital to use.
I also thought it was interesting to hear how unimpressive Savoie has been. A bit of cold water being thrown on the narrative that the Oilers acquired Buffalo's "top prospect".

I wondered if Ken was popping up somewhere when his son, Brad who was an AGM of the Oilers, 'mutually parted ways' with Edmonton this week.

He just didn't do much in Penticton, so some Oiler fans were disappointed. That said, they're back on the Kool-Aid, comparing him to Stankoven, and saying he had a great first day in camp.
