This contract by itself is fine good even...I will save brilliant and other teams dream of this for teams whos moves translate to on ice success.

Its wild how hard some of you defend some of these things...contract is fine, I think the praise is over the top. You don't, seems like we disagree...okay fine.
I think the bigger point is that the Wings sign a very good young player to a very good 8 year contract covering all of his prime years and all you so is crap all over the team.

Which has nothing to do with the player or the contract itself.

It's two independent points which you seemed to connect for no apparent reason.

Which is what the Flames will likely be if they don't get some top 5 picks.

They get 8 years, and don't really have to overpay on upside at all.

If he just plateaus as a 70-75 point forward then you're already happy with that for $8M.

Travis Konecny just got $8.75M and he's a career high 68 points (if you pro-rate his best P/PG season it's 82)

Jake Guentzel has a career high 84, and put up 73 and 77 the past two seasons and he's getting $9M.

72 points for $8M is already market rate, if there is anymore upside on Raymond still then this is a huge win for Detroit.
It's also possible Detroit bought high on Raymond.

His shooting % his first 2 years were 12.5, and 12.7%. Last year it jumped to 19% and he scores 72 points.

Eberle as an example of this went 11.4% his first year and 19% his second year. He scored 76 points in his sophomore year, and never topped 65 for the rest of his career.

Will be interesting to watch going forward. An outlier shooting % in a contract year can make things tricky.

I'm not the one who said it was a brilliant deal and that other teams dream of having players like this. That is what I was responding to, and you have a difference of opinion...okay

I don't know what a couple of you are so angry about it. I get that signing every young player to a long term big money deal is the new trend but its mostly bad teams doing it. Its not going to work out in every case. Its certainly a fair contract but Its far to early to say things like steal. I mean he had a 19% shooting percentage last year, the idea that that is going to climb is unlikely.

Any other examples besides just the one, from over a decade ago?

Nurse got $9.5m x forever after putting up a totally unsustainable shooting percentage in the Covid-distorted ‘North Division’ for a shortened season.

I can understand why Oil Stain wouldn't want to go there, but it's definitely another example.
