Hahahahaha separate mcdrai "for the first time ever"
Hahahaha
Putting the two together their only play, and will remain so as long as they're oilers. You'll never see a game where they're down and the two aren't paired up.
That's the extent of coaching the oilers in the mcdavid era. One big red button.

They actually brought in legitimate top 6 wingers so maybe for the first time ever, they can actually separate McDrai for a prolonged period of time.
Also improves the team's 2nd PP unit. Arvidsson will help the PK as well.

Lol 2nd PP unit

40% at ES together last year. Around 50% when trailing. Trailing in the 3rd I'm not sure the exact number but I bet it's closer to 75%.
Shifts after a PK is also a go to for them. I love how some expect for the percent at ES to be 0%. It will never be 0%

It's been a while since I've seen dino in full homer mode, where he repeats the same thing over and over again.
It's the reality of the NHL, there is little discipline around contracts. Frankly Flames did it right with Iginla but that was kind of before everyone signed 8 year deals.
Oilers will try to compete for next few years while they are still two of the very best players. We can argue around the edges, but that is roughly their competitive window. Fill in around them and maybe they get it done once, hopefully not. If they luck into some stellar goaltending, they will have a decent chance.

Skinner is so good his non playoff team with plenty of cap space is paying him not to play for them
God this thread will be one to bump yearly. "7 year contenders" will age nicely

Come on now the Oilers arent improving...we have seen how good they are without depth. I have already said this year is their only shot. They have zero prospects to fill in...the roster in 2 years will be bad like the McDavid early years.

I suppose we will be happy with this contract in a few years
but
Honestly, I was hoping he would go to free agency.

The last deal was great for the Oilers. Age 22-29 for below market. This one is great for Draisaitl and horrible for the Oilers.

100 points is a minimum for someone at that AAV. And that's just to remain not disappointed.
Even Leon putting up 80 points say at age 33 would be a comparablde underperformance to Huberdeau's 50-60 point seasons relative to cap hit.
They're going to be sitting on two of the fugliest contracts in league history in a few seasons (+ Nurse).

Talk about a buyout proof contract, Salary is $1m per year and $104m is bonus money.
Next eight July 1st paydays.
$15,500,000
$15,500,000
$15,500,000
$13,000,000
$11,500,000
$11,000,000
$11,000,000
$11,000,000

There is the possibility that this is a hedge against McDavid leaving. They need at least one 'star' to keep the unwashed happy for the next few years.
Maybe McDavid is playing the Oilers and will tell them he isn't re-signing next summer. Especially if they have a lacklustre 2025 playoffs like I believe they will.
One can hope.

Another dumb move by an incompetent management group. I suddenly feel great about the Huberdeau contract. We just have to tune out the Draisatl and McDavid show for a few more years and then finally live in peace.

Draisaitl and McDavid are just too good of players to not be worth extending even if at the end the contacts might suck. They have at least 5 more elite years of Draisaitl and he will be still great in 8
|
Draisaitl at 14 million this year, not a great deal but not a bad deal. But if he's not top 3 in scoring because he sure ain't going to win you the Selke, then the contract becomes questionable. All the pressure is on Leon now.
And with nothing coming up to act as cheap talent to fill in the gaps. And realistically Bouchard and McDavid coming up to huge money contracts.
The Oilers are thin, they might get another run at the cup. But I look at their goaltending their blueline and the ancientness of that lineup, and I wouldn't be optimistic past this year.

I know Diss has fake left for the dozenth time but it would be delicious if his claim that McDavid is 100% leaving next summer was true and the oilers are left with a declining Draisaitl and Bouchard sans McEffect on his stats line making obscene amounts of dough.
Edit: 2 summers, whatever

He put his big years from his age 23-27 years and probably peaked with the 128 point season.
He was down 22 points last year, and half way through the playoffs he was invisible.
That is the beauty of of this deal. Like with Huberdeau signing long term contracts at this age for this type of money is usually for past performance.
The fact the Oilers wasted that type of production for that cap hit is hilarious.

This is why I keep posting because I can't fathom somebody whos not an Oiler fanboy not seeing this. They came close one time with McDrai in their prime and on bargain contracts. When they are at max contracts and older the team won't be better lol. They have nothing coming to shore things up any depth will be UFA....league min guys with their cap.
Its not a homer take these guys are DONE after this season and especially after 2. Forget the cup in 2 years they will be middling let alone 4 or 5 years. Source? they were already middling before adding a bit of depth (which is really old)
