Forget that clown. I hope he, and put who commit similar crimes, get the maximum sentences possible.
At the end of the day, 2 sets of families are forever changed and destroyed from this. I feel for both sets of families. I have no sympathy for the driver, but I feel terrible for his family.

Both can be true.

Someone on reddit championing to have 13th Ave near the new arena renamed after Johnny

https://www.reddit.com/r/CalgaryFlames/s/6yYhl8ajaX

I would absolutely support this

To me, the latter has no excuse ever. Period. That man made a choice, and he's still alive to deal with that choice, and so he should for the rest of his days. The Gaudreau brothers are gone forever, through no fault of their own.

This is a false equivalency.

Alcoholism leads to bad choices. It's not a choice to get behind a wheel just part of the process. If you want retribution, go for it, but it's not going to bring back anybody.

Respectfully, I know that your point is valid, but it's beyond the pale for me.

To be frank on this issue, I've known a lot of alcoholism in my family. Substance abuse of many kinds as well beyond that. But none of them have ever considered endangering the lives of others that way.

I'm sticking firm on this one...it's a choice. Maybe the judgement can be clouded a little, but that person still knows exactly what the potential consequences are when they decide to drive.

Again, it's not 1975. This has been part of the zeitgeist for too long to plead ignorance. He knew what he was doing.

There isn't a 13th Ave near the arena. 12th Ave is the north side of the arena and 14th is the south. 13th Ave ends at Macleod Trail.

Not sure if we’ll ever know if this guy is really an addict or not. So maybe its a big assumption.

He maybe just a person with an alcohol problem. Which is different.

Either way he has a life to restore whatever he can, regardless of his mental state today. We’ll see what he does.

I’ve been trying to soak this one up as best I can. But it seems to be hitting me harder than I really thought it could. I’m really struggling with the idea that he’s actually gone.

It's not a choice. No more than a drug addiction.

Actually there’s a little bit of 13th (it meets 3rd street) between Macleod and the casino. Not much and still not where the area will be but it is kind of there.
Edit: actually it goes right through the new rink according to google maps

There is a 13th Ave right beside the new arena. How poetic for the franchise the new arena starts on 12th Ave, continues past 13th Ave and ends on 14th Ave....

There's a stretch of 13th Avenue that will run from 5A Street east towards the river and the SAM Centre on the east side of Scotia Place. And I think there's a short stretch on the west side that runs west towards the casino, but that's basically a laneway within the parking lot behind BMO Centre.

Anyone know what will happen to all the stuff at the memorial when they take it down? I'm assuming the Gatorade and skittles will get donated to the foodbank.
